Facebook Teams Up With Think Tank Against Global Election Meddling

It has been widely reported that Facebook was the preferred medium of choice for foreign actors who wanted to influence the 2016 presidential election in the United States. Facebook has since promised to do more to ensure that something like that doesn’t happen again. It has already taken some concrete steps to prevent the flow of fake news on the world’s largest social network. Facebook has now teamed up with an influential think tank, the Atlantic Council, to fight election meddling on a global scale.

Facebook reiterates that it’s investing significant resources to ensure that its service is not abused during elections anywhere in the world. It’s doubling the number of people that work on safety and security as well as relying on intelligence technologies to block fake accounts and misinformation.

The partnership with the Atlantic Council will help Facebook come up with solutions to hard problems. It will work with experts from the think tank’s Digital Forensic Research Lab to get real-time insights and updates on emerging threats and disinformation campaigns being launched on Facebook from across the globe.

It’s also going to use the Atlantic Council’s Research Unit Monitoring Missions during elections to focus on a particular geographic area and monitor activity for misinformation and foreign interference. The company says that this will effectively increase the number of “eyes and ears” that it has working to spot potential abuse of the Facebook platform, particularly during elections.

Sony Will Continue Making Physical PS Vita Games For Japan

It was reported earlier this week that Sony will no longer be making physical PlayStation Vita games. The announcement didn’t come as a surprise considering that the handheld console is quite old now and the company doesn’t really have any plans to launch a successor. So while the company is not going to ship physical Vita GameCards globally by the end of fiscal year 2018, Sony Japan will continue making and selling them in its home country.

Sony is no longer going to make physical PlayStation Vita game cards which means that those who own this console in markets across North America and Europe will now be out of luck. That much the company had officially confirmed earlier this week.

An important distinction to be made here is that the company is only discontinuing the production of game cards and not the console. Even though it might only seem like a matter of time before the PlayStation Vita is discontinued completely, the handheld console lives on for now.

Sony Japan has now said that it will continue to support PS Vita in the country. This means that it’s going to continue manufacturing game cards for the handheld console in Japan. It didn’t confirm or deny anything about a possible discontinuation of the PS Vita, though.

Starbucks Says Anyone Can Now Sit In Its Cafes ― Even Without Buying Anything

The new policy was unveiled weeks after the controversial arrest of two black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks.

Fully-functional Dick Tracy Bluetooth Watch: It’s Time for Dick

Does anyone even know who Dick Tracy was anymore? Probably not, but they know his watch. Nick Mathis and his brother want to make that watch a reality. So they’re looking for 5,000 people interested in an officially licensed, Bluetooth enabled replica of Dick Tracy’s watch that can make and receive calls. Oh, and it will also tell the time with an analog timepiece.

I like the retro style. It’s a watch on top and a speaker on the bottom. It’s like my grandparents are designing modern gadgets. In a good way. Obviously, it will pair with any Bluetooth-enabled smartphone and it goes with anything, a suit, jeans and a t-shirt, and even a trench coat. If the pieces that backers get really look this good, they should have no problems. It looks just like the comic book version.

If you want to do your part, you can join their Indiegogo mailing list here and get 40% off when the campaign launches. Or you can just buy yourself a smartwatch and forget you ever heard of Dick Tracy. Because you probably never even read any of his comic strips and only know him from that terrible movie with Madonna and Warren Beatty.

Deadpool Bob Ross Funko POP! Figure: Happy Little Chimichangas

I was a huge fan of the first Deadpool movie – it was hilarious, action packed, violent, and raunchy. If Deadpool 2 lives up to the genius marketing the film has had, I expect to be equally impressed with it. One of my favorite things Deadpool has done is dress up like Bob Ross.

I grew up watching Ross turn mistakes into happy little trees and am still a fan of his show and work. Entertainment Earth has a Deadpool Bob Ross Pop! figure that will be available this June, and it looks awesome.

Rosspool comes with a giant paintbrush, painter’s palette, and that afro that was Ross’ signature look. The toy sells for $10.99, and Deadpool fans need to own it.

China Joins Commercial Space Race With First Private Rocket Launch

U.S. companies like SpaceX have galloped ahead in the commercial space race but China doesn’t want to be left out as well. The country has kicked off its very own commercial space race as the first rocket was launched by a private Chinese company earlier this week. Beijing-based OneSpace Technologies became the first private company in China to launch a rocket.

China already has a significant presence in space. Almost all of the work done so far has been by the government’s China National Space Administration which has dispatched satellites, sent rovers to the moon, and has even sent astronauts to space.

According to local reports, OneSpace Technologies’ OS-X rocket was launched from an undisclosed location in China on a suborbital trajectory this Wednesday. The rocket reportedly reached an altitude of 25 miles and covered a distance of about 170 miles before it fell back to Earth.

The launch was meant to demonstrate the company’s potential and how it intends to use that in order to develop a scalable business that sends small satellites to space. It’s a relatively recent development in the country that allows private companies to send rockets up in space.

The government allowed private companies to start working on launching satellites just four years ago so while OneSpace Technologies might be the first one, it’s going to be far from the only Chinese private company that makes spaceflights in the years to come.

Google Duplex Will Record Calls And Tell People About It

Google demonstrated its Duplex artificial intelligence technology at the I/O 2018 conference earlier this month. The technology is powered by artificial intelligence and it sounds very human-like, it’s capable of making calls on the user’s behalf and handling tasks such as getting a haircut appointment. Google has already clarified that Duplex will inform the person on the other end of the call that they’re talking to a bot even though it may not seem like it at first and it will also tell them that the call is being recorded, but there is a caveat.

Many were amazed when Google demonstrated Duplex at I/O 2018. The technology is still under development and yet it’s capable of having conversations that sound convincingly human. After the amazement followed ethics concerns which Google has now been trying to address.

Google is going to launch Duplex in experimental form this summer. The technology will live inside Google Assistant so users will just have to tell Assistant to schedule a haircut appointment or book a table for them at a restaurant and Duplex will actually call that business on their behalf to get it done.

The company has confirmed that not only will Duplex inform the person at the other end of the call that they’re talking to a bot but it’s also going to let them know that calls are being recorded. The reason why Duplex will record all of the calls that it makes is for the user to review the conversation later and see how it all went.

Bloomberg reports that this disclaimer will be provided “in certain jurisdictions,” which basically means that this will be enforced in states that make it legally binding on both parties for phone calls to provide explicit consent for recording.

That makes it necessary for the company to do that in those states and it’s yet to be confirmed whether Google will make Duplex share the same disclaimer in states where it’s not legally required to do so.

LG G7 ThinQ Pre-Orders Reportedly Performing Better Than G6

LG unveiled its new flagship smartphone for the year earlier this month and it confirmed the global release of the LG G7 ThinQ a couple of days ago. It’s going to start selling the handset in its home market of South Korea first before gradually making the device available in more countries across the globe. According to a new report from South Korea, the LG G7 ThinQ pre-orders are actually performing better than the LG G6 pre-orders did last year.

The report claims that more than 70,000 people in South Korea have pre-ordered the LG G7 ThinQ compared to the some 40,000 people who pre-ordered the LG G6 in the four days after the company opened pre-orders for the handset in its home market. The numbers are for the LG G7 ThinQ and LG G7 ThinQ Plus combined that have been available for pre-order in South Korea since May 11th.

The LG G7 ThinQ is the first flagship smartphone that the company has released after it shook up its smartphone release strategy considerably. It’s an attempt on the company’s part to turn things around at its mobile division that has been bleeding resources over the past few quarters.

Despite the solid pre-order performance in South Korea, it’s far too soon to be certain about the success of this device. It depends on how the LG G7 ThinQ performs in other markets and that’s yet to be witnessed.
