Apple Reportedly Sold 600,000 HomePods During Q1 2018

Just like how the Apple Watch is one of the more expensive wearables in the market today, so was the HomePod which at $350 makes it pricier than other smart speakers in the market. However unlike the Apple Watch which seems to be selling pretty well, the HomePod isn’t doing as hot and according to the latest figures, has only managed to sell 600,000 units to date.

This is according to a report from Strategy Analytics who claims that this has allowed Apple to capture about 6% of the global smart speaker market, putting them well behind the likes of Amazon and Google. While 600,000 is still a lot of speakers, compared to Amazon it pales in comparison as Amazon has reportedly shipped an estimated 4 million Echo devices during the same quarter.

This gives Amazon a 43.6% share of the market, followed by Google who commands 26.5% of the market with about 2.4 million Google Home speakers shipped in the first quarter of 2018. This is actually not the first time we’re hearing that the HomePod speakers aren’t doing as well as Apple would have liked.

Last month there were rumors that claimed Apple had halved their orders for the HomePod and could even be considering creating a low-cost model to help spur sales. Analysts are also slightly pessimistic about the HomePod’s success, with some estimating that Apple might only sell as little as 2 million units in 2018.

Standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi Movie Is Reportedly Happening

Last year there were reports that a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi movie could be happening, and now according to a report from TMZ (via IGN), it seems that those rumors are true and that the movie is indeed going to proceed with Stephen Daldry who is expected to helm the movie and with production reportedly taking place next spring.

However unlike the standalone Han Solo movie, the Obi-Wan movie is apparently not going to be an origins story. Instead it is expected to be a direct prequel to the 1977 Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. It will be set on the planet of Tatooine and will follow Obi-Wan who is currently living in exile and only comes out of hiding when a tribe of Sand People and local Tatooine farmers begin feuding, in which presumably Obi-Wan will play a role in defusing the situation.

It is unclear who will be starring in the movie and if Ewan McGregor will return to play the role of the character, although the actor had previously expressed interest in doing so. Given that we’re starting to see Disney branch out into Star Wars-related movies that don’t just focus on the main storyline, we suppose it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a solo Obi-Wan movie could be in the works. Take it with a grain of salt for now and hopefully we’ll have the official details soon.

Apple Is Starting To Sell Out Of Its AirPort Base Stations

Apple announced last month that they would discontinuing its AirPort router lineup and now according to MacRumors, it looks like AirPort units are already starting to sell out either in Apple’s Stores or Apple’s Online Stores. The first “casualty” would be the AirPort Extreme which has been listed as sold out in the US, but is still available in limited quantities in other parts of the world.

However the AirPort Express and AirPort Time Capsule still appear to be available but we expect with Apple killing off the lineup, eventually they will run out of stock too. However if you have had good experiences with them, maybe you might want to restock one or two units at home if you wish to keep using them, or maybe you just want to keep a piece of tech history with you.

Apple had previously stated that they will continue to sell AirPort products until supply runs out, so like we said you better move fast if you’re hoping to get your hands on them. That being said, it is a bit sad to see them go despite Apple not having refreshed them for years. The AirPort routers have ranked pretty high in terms of customer satisfaction, but we suppose it doesn’t come as a surprise given that Apple’s focus seems to be on its higher-end products.

Apple had also previously killed off its Thunderbolt Displays and have instead worked with LG on creating monitors designed specifically for their Mac computers.
