Walmart Abandons Plan To Replace Cashiers With Machines

Walmart had planned on expanding the use of its Mobile Scan & Go technology in order to replace store cashiers with machines but according to a new report, the company has decided not to go forward with this plan. The Mobile Scan & Go technology enabled customers to ring up their own purchases and then pay for them without having to go to a store cashier. The company has decided against it now because the technology didn’t really work for its customers.

Bloomberg reports that Walmart has decided to get rid of the Mobile Scan & Go machines at its stores thus abanding its plans to replace store cashiers with machines. Walmart has been trying to push this plan through for a year and a successful launch would have resulted in savings down the line for the company because it wouldn’t have had to employ as many cashiers.

The technology is being shelved because it confused many shoppers who found bagging, weighing, and scanning items such as fruits and vegetables to be a hassle. It essentially forced customers who were used to going to a store cashier to change their shopping habits.

A potential replacement of this technology is now being tested by Walmart. It’s called Check Out With Me where employees will ring up a customer’s order and then scan their payment card using a handheld device from anywhere inside the store.

Nissan Launches A Solar Energy Package Of Its Own

Nissan has been a player in the electric car market for a long time and now after launching its revamped Leaf electric car, the company has decided to offer an all-in-one solar energy storage solution much like the one Tesla offers in the United States. The solution will be backed by Nissan’s xStorage home battery as part of the Nissan Energy Solar home energy scheme.

Tesla has long been selling its Powerwall batteries for home energy storage solutions and has recently been selling photovoltaic panels as well to provide a one-stop solution for those looking to switch their homes to solar energy.

The Nissan Energy Solar solution has only been launched in the United Kingdom for now, though, allowing customers to optimize the way their properties create, store, and consume energy through solar panels, batteries, and a home energy management system.

Nissan says that this system can deliver a reduction of up to 66 percent in household electricity bills with the ability to generate, store, and manage energy for overnight use even on rainy and overcast days when the sun isn’t shining in all its glory.

Customers will be given the choice to select energy storage systems that use new batteries or recycled batteries from Nissan’s Leaf electric cars. The latter will maximize the use of recyclable materials for a more sustainable option.

Prices for a six-panel system start at £3,881 which is just over $5,200.

Sony Headphones Finally Get Google Assistant Support

It was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 in January that the Google Assistant support will soon be landing on a wide variety of devices. It has since made its way to many devices but Sony’s headphones had yet to receive support and that has finally happened today. Select Sony headphones now have support for the Google Assistant.

Sony did launch new products such as headphones and headsets at CES 2018 that came with Assistant and the company also promised that it would release an update which would bring Google Assistant support to some of its existing models as well.

The company has now rolled out firmware update version 2.0.2 for its WH-1000XM2 over-ear headphones and WI-1000X in-ear neckband earphones. Both products are now optimized for Google Assistant which means that they have proper integration with the AI assistant.

Users can already trigger assistant on most compatible headphones by tapping and holding on the call button but proper integration brings a variety of features such as push-to-talk and the ability to work with Assistant on iOS devices. Users can even have push notifications spoken to them.

Once the headset’s software has been updated, users can get this integration up and running by changing the noise cancellation/ambient button to launch Google Assistant instead. Sony did say back then that this update would also be released for 2 WH-H900N models and the WF-1000X and the WH-CH900N as well. Those models may soon get this update too.
