HTC U12+ For The US Won’t Include Headphone Adapter

Given how we’re seeing more smartphone manufacturers drop the 3.5mm headphone jack, it’s not a surprise that the HTC U12+ has also done away with it as well. However what we’ve seen some companies do is throw in a dongle/adapter that lets users connect existing headphones via the micro USB/USB-C/Lightning port as an alternative.

Unfortunately it looks like HTC won’t be doing that for the U12+. This has been confirmed in a tweet by HTC USA in which they responded to a question by a customer asking about the headphone adapter. According to the response, it seems that HTC will not be including the adapter but will instead give customers a pair of HTC USonic Adaptive Earphones instead.

For those unfamiliar, the USonic Adaptive Earphones are a wired pair of earphones that connect to your phone via USB-C. We suppose it’s good that HTC is giving customers a pair of compatible headphones right out of the box, but at the same time we’re sure that there are plenty of users out there who already have a pair of headphones that they like and would like to keep using.

We suppose it’s not terribly difficult to get your hands on a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter, but it would have made it a lot easier if HTC had included it. Note that this tweet comes from the HTC USA and based on replies to the tweet, it appears that HTC in other parts of the world are including the adapter, so it could only be the US market that won’t be getting it.

Google Pixel 3 XL Said To Feature An OLED Panel From LG

Google is due to launch its Pixel 3 handsets later this year and if a new report out of China is to be believed, the company is going to opt for OLED panels from LG for the Pixel 3 XL. Its predecessor also features an OLED display but the report mentions that Google will be keeping up with industry trends this year by opting for a notched display. With Android P being optimized for notched displays, it’s no surprise that Google wants to jump on this bandwagon as well.

With LG Display now believed to be the sole supplier of OLED panels for the Pixel 3 XL, it’s possible that the Korean company might return as the manufacturer of this device as well. The Pixel 2 released last year was manufactured by HTC while the larger model, the Pixel 2 XL, was made by LG.

As far as the Pixel 3 is concerned, it’s said to feature a 18:9 aspect ratio display but no notch. Despite the differences in the panels, the underlying specifications are expected to largely remain the same with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor paired with 6GB of RAM and likely up to 256GB of storage.

Google hasn’t said anything about its new Pixel handsets so far and we can’t expect it to for the next few months as there’s still some ways to go before the new Pixel smartphones become due.

Xiaomi Took Full Advantage Of Rising Global Smartphone Sales

Market research firm Gartner has published its figures for global smartphone sales in the first quarter of this year. Smartphone sales were up slightly across the globe compared to the same period in 2017 and China-based Xiaomi seems to have taken full advantage of that as its market share has surged quite a bit during this period.

Gartner’s data shows that global smartphone sales were up by 1.3 percent in the first quarter of 2018 compared to the same period last year. That may not seem much when you consider the entire smartphone market as a whole but some manufacturers have taken full advantage of increased demand.

Xiaomi’s market share has surged by 118 percent from Q1 2017 to Q2 2017. It has sold 28.5 million units to customers so far this year compared to 12.7 million in the same period last year.

Huawei, another rapidly growing Chinese manufacturer, also reaped the benefits of increased demand. It has sold over 40 million units to customers so far compared to 34 million this time last year.

The data shows that Samsung remained the largest smartphone vendor across the globe in the first quarter of this year, selling over 78.5 million units in this period. Apple remains firmly in second place with 54 million units sold in the first quarter of this year.
