Instagram CEO Confirms Usage Insights Feature Being Developed

It was reported yesterday that there’s an unannounced “Usage Insights” feature in Instagram’s Android app which will enable users to keep track of the time that they spend on the social network. Instagram initially said that it had nothing to announce at this point in time but the Facebook-owned company’s CEO has now confirmed that Instagram is indeed developing this Usage Insights feature to give users a more in-depth look at their Instagram usage statistics.

The Usage Insights feature has been discovered in the code of Instagram’s Android app. It hasn’t been enabled as yet so it’s unclear when this feature will be rolled out for all users.

What the code doesn’t reveal is that whether this feature will let users know about the time they have spent on Instagram ever since they joined the social network or allow them to see the figures for a shorter timeframe such as a day, week, or month.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom has now confirmed on Twitter that the company is indeed working on this Usage Insights feature, adding that the company is building tools that will “help the IG community know more about the time they spend on Instagram.” He said that any time that users spend on Instagram should be “positive and intentional.”

Whether or not this feature will include reminders like YouTube had added to nudge users to take a break if they have been using the app for too long is unclear right now.

Chrome 66 Autoplay Changes Partially Rolled Back

Google rolled out Chrome 66 earlier this month and it brought new autoplay blocking functionality to the world’s most popular web browser. The new autoplay rules blocked audio that played on its own as soon as the user opened a website, however, this change broke countless online games and apps that used autoplaying content for legitimate purposes. In response to their complaints, Google has announced that some of those changes have now been partially rolled back.

Chrome version 66 introduced new rules which would automatically mute autoplaying ads and videos that tend to be quite annoying and often end up pushing users to ad blockers which is not good for both Google and its publishers. However, this move ended up removing the audio completely from interactive web experiences that required specific commands.

“The team here is working hard to improve things for users and developers, but in this case we didn’t do a good job of communicating the impact of the new autoplay policy to developers,” acknowledges Google product manager John Pallett.

To be clear, the company hasn’t completely removed the new autoplay rules that it introduced with Chrome 66. What it has done is roll back the limits on the Web Audio API system that app developers users. The limits on general autoplaying audio and video have been retained. The rollback isn’t permanent as the product manager says that they will be back in Chrome 70 this October so developers have plenty of time until then to update their code and bring it in harmony with Google’s guidelines.

Microsoft Reportedly Developing Budget Surface Tablets

Microsoft has seen considerable success with its Windows-powered Surface tablets but it would be a stretch to say that the models it has released so far have been affordably priced. That might change in the future if a new report is to be believed as Microsoft is reportedly developing a budget lineup of Surface tablets to compete with low-cost iPad options from Apple.

Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that Microsoft is developing a lineup of new Surface tablets that will be affordably priced to take on the affordable iPads. They won’t just be cheaper and smaller versions of the Surface Pro tablets.

Microsoft is reportedly starting from scratch and designing these tablets around a 10 inch display and rounded corners which would be in line with more traditional tablet design instead of the more rectangular design of the existing Surface tablets. These new models will be 20 percent lighter than the Surface Pro and reportedly have USB Type-C ports for charging and Windows 10 Pro while being priced at $400.

They will be powered by Intel processors and graphics with LTE options being offered. The Surface kickstand will be retained as well but the new tablets will reportedly not ship with a keyboard or stylus. The company is said to be working on cheaper versions of the mouse, style, and keyboard cover for this new lineup.

It remains to be seen, though, when Microsoft will be launching this new Surface tablet lineup.
