Netflix may have started out as an online video streaming service that made it very easy for you to stream TV shows and movies from other networks and studios but it has since grown into a veritable original content powerhouse. The company has gradually been expanding its investment into original shows and movies. It spends billions of dollars annually on original content and the company’s content chief has now said that 85 percent of Netflix’s new spending will now be on original shows and movies.
Netflix’ chief content officer Ted Sarandos has said that almost 85 percent of Netflix’s new spending is being used for original TV shows, movies, and other productions such as documentaries.
It expects to spend a whopping $8 billion on content this year but Sarandos stopped short of breaking up how much of that $8 billion will be used for licensing costs vs spending on original content.
Sarandos did mention that Netflix is going to have around 1,000 original titles in its library by the end of this year with 470 of these titles premiering between now and the end of this year. It’s not like this move isn’t paying dividends for the company as Sarandos pointed out that more than 90 percent of Netflix’s subscribers watch its original programming.

While 1Gbps internet connections still remain elusive for most of us, people in South Korea will be able to get an impressive 10Gbps internet connection later this year. SK Broadband, a division of South Korea’s largest mobile carrier SK Telecom, has announced that it’s going to roll out a 10Gbps internet service in the country before the end of this year. This means that users will be able to hit download speeds of over 1GB/sec with the 10Gbps connection.
SK Broadband actually announced its 2.5Gbps service recently and that’s when it mentioned that customers will soon be able to get its 5Gbps and 10Gbps packages as well. It’s going to use its Gigabit Passive Optical Network that’s already delivering the 2.5Gbps service to roll out the 5/10Gbps service as well.
This network technology uses a point-to-multipoint architecture which runs off of a single optical fiber line with several unpowered fiber splitters. A single SK GPON can actually reach peak speeds of up to 52.2Gbps, on paper at least, with the company allowing users to take advantage of this technology up to 10Gbps.
SK Broadband has confirmed that it’s going to roll out this blistering faster internet service in the second half of this year. SK Telecom isn’t the only carrier in the country that’s going to offer 10Gbps internet this year. Korea Telecom, a rival operator, also has a 10Gbps service launch scheduled for September this year.

French premium cable television company Canal+ is slowly moving away from building its own set top boxes. As Next INpact spotted, you can now subscribe to Canal+ and get an Apple TV 4K with Canal+’s myCanal app already preloaded.
Canal+ has been around for decades and was the first premium TV channel in France. Over the years, the company started distributing all sorts of premium channels through satellite, cable and partnerships with internet service providers.
While you had to get your own Canal+ set top box to receive Canal+ 15 years ago, the company’s own box has slowly become irrelevant. As all the main French internet service providers give you a set top box, Canal+ has partnered with them to offer multiple add-ons to receive Canal+’s content.
When Canal+ announced its most recent device, Canal+ already said that you’d get a better experience with the myCanal app on the Apple TV.
That’s why Canal+ is betting everything on over-the-top distribution. If you don’t subscribe to Canal+ through your ISP, you can get an Apple TV 4K for €6 per month in addition to your TV package. If your internet connection isn’t fast enough or you’d rather use satellite TV, you can still get a Canal+ set top box.
But the writing is on the wall. Most people will soon watch Canal+ through myCanal on Android TV, tvOS, iOS, Android, a Samsung TV and desktop computers.
In France, Molotov and myCanal have been some of the top performing apps for tvOS and Android TV. This partnership could boost the Apple TV in France.
Though Apple Music had something of a late start, that doesn’t seem to be having a negative impact on its growth. Tim Cook is talking subscriber numbers today, and it turns out that Apple Music has added millions more users since the last time we checked in. That’s particularly impressive, because the last time we were updated on total Apple … Continue reading
Researchers just published a paper describing a synthetic molecule that prevents the spread of the common cold. This lab-created molecule blocks the fatty-acid attachment required for proliferation of the cold. Roberto Solari and Edward Tate at Imperial College London, UK and a whole bunch of other researchers made this discovery a reality. This stuff starts with the rhinovirus. That’s the … Continue reading
