New HP Omen 15 Gaming Laptop Is More Refined And Powerful

HP today unveiled its new Omen 15 gaming laptop which will compete in the market against similar products from the likes of Razer, Gigabyte, ASUS, and others. HP’s Omen 15 has been a popular model and the latest iteration of this device is not only more refined than its predecessor, it’s also more powerful.

The laptop is housed in a case that’s much slimmer than its predecessor while the display bezels have noticeably shrunk as well. The design of the new HP Omen 15 is quite similar to its predecessor as it has the same black and red plastic case detailed with angular lines. However, HP does say that this iteration is 7.4 percent less wide and just under five percent thinner than its predecessor.

The 15.6 inch display has bezels that are 65 percent smaller around the sides and 35 percent at the top. Configuration options for the HP Omen 15 include 8th Generation Intel processors with up to GTX 1070 Max-Q graphics. Display options include 1080p and 4K at 60Hz and 1080p at 144Hz with some configurations featuring NVIDIA’s G-SYNC technology.

Prices for the new HP Omen 15 gaming laptop start at $979 and go up depending on the configuration selected. It’s going to be available for purchase starting July 19th.

OnePlus 6 Face Unlock Fooled By Printed Photo

Face unlock isn’t really a new feature on the OnePlus 6 given that the company already allowed the OnePlus 5T to do this. However, since that device didn’t have depth sensing or 3D face mapping, it was simply using the front camera to recognize the user’s face. OnePlus didn’t add those components to the OnePlus 6 as well and it too relies on the front camera. This means that the system isn’t as secure as what you’d find on other devices and someone has demonstrated that by unlocking a OnePlus 6 with a printed photo of the owner’s face.

Twitter user @rikvduijn wanted to try and see what it would take to fool the facial recognition system on the OnePlus 6. So he handed the locked device to a friend who had a printed paper cutout of his face. The handset took a few seconds before recognizing the face and unlocking the device. The method is said to work with a black and white print out as well.

One would think that it wouldn’t be this easy to fool the facial recognition system but the video tells a different story. It would have been a different story altogether if the device had the required components for depth sensing and 3D face mapping.

That being said, it would be in the best interest of OnePlus 6 owners to rely on more safer methods such as PIN, pattern or the fingerprint sensor if they want to absolutely make sure that nobody gets into their device.

OnePlus says in a statement that it has designed face unlock for convenience and has always recommended that people use the other methods for security. “For this reason Face Unlock is not enabled for any secure apps such as banking or payments. We’re constantly working to improve all of our technology, including Face Unlock,” the company added.

T-Mobile LG V30 And V30 Oreo Update Released Once Again

T-Mobile first started rolling out the much-awaited Android 8.0 Oreo update for the LG V30 and V30+ on its network some three weeks ago, however, the company ended up halting the rollout soon after the release. Now, almost a month after it was first released, the Oreo update is now finally being released once again for the V30 and V30+ on T-Mobile’s network.

T-Mobile initially released the Oreo update for these devices in the first week of this month. Owners could upgrade their devices through LG Bridge or manually by downloading and installing the OTA package. The carrier halted the rollout about five days later following multiple reports about bugs and issues with the update.

The carrier has addressed all of the issues and has thus started rolling out the firmware update once again. It’s rolling out software version H93220h for the LG V30 and V30+ on its network and aside from bringing everything that’s part and parcel of Android 8.0 Oreo, this update also includes the April 2018 security patch.

T-Mobile is rolling out the update in phases in a bid to prevent network congestion so don’t worry if you own one of the devices on T-Mobile and have yet to receive and over-the-air update notification. One should be landing on your device in the not too distant future.
