NES Classic Edition Re-Release Date Announced

If you were like me, and not happy with Nintendo when it discontinued the NES Classic Edition, you will be glad to hear this news. The Japanese video game maker has announced that the miniature 8-bit system will be back on June 29, 2018.

The real question will be how many Nintendo will make. It has offered no guidance on that tidbit. The first time around it only made a fraction of the number needed to meet demand. That meant scalpers bought them up and sold them at big markups, pissing gamers off the world over.

It will pack the same features and games as it did last time around. That means 30 different titles of 8-bit gaming goodness including Super Mario Bros., Metroid, Donkey Kong, Zelda, and lots more. The MSRP for the NES Classic Edition will be $59.99 – about 1/3rd of what it will cost you to buy one of the scalped ones these days.

NES Classic Edition Will Be Available Again June 29

Last year many gamers were disappointed when the NES Classic was cancelled. Given that Nintendo seemed to have problems trying to keep up with demand, it meant that many gamers weren’t able to get ahold of it which led to crazy prices on eBay. However the good news is that you’ll get your chance again.

In an announcement on Nintendo’s Facebook page, the company has confirmed that the NES Classic will be sold again starting on the 29th of June. “NES Classic Edition will return to stores on June 29! This system and the Super NES Classic Edition system are expected to be available through the end of the year.”

This is in line with the company’s promise last year when they announced that the NES Classic would be making a return in “significant numbers”, which hopefully means that Nintendo will have better management over the supply of the console. There will not be any changes to the console, obviously, so it is basically a restock.

So if you missed out on your chance to buy the NES Classic last year, it looks like you’ll be getting your chance again next month, so mark your calendars if you’re hoping to get ahead of the demand.

Lenovo Teases An All-Screen Smartphone

These days we are seeing more companies starting to make phones with edge-to-edge displays, where they are sometimes marketed as full screen phones. However the reality is that for the most part, many of them do not sport full screen displays as there is still some bezels left, but could Lenovo beat everyone to the punch?

In a post on Weibo (via Engadget) by Lenovo’s President Chang Cheng, he seems to be teasing that the company could be working on a “true” all-screen smartphone. In the sketch that he uploaded (see above), he references what he is calling the Lenovo Z5, and from what we can tell this is a smartphone that truly has an all-screen design.

This means that not only are the bezels on the edge gone, but so is the notch at the top. We’ve seen this approached in a couple of different ways, such as with the iPhone X where the speaker and front-facing camera are placed in the notch that interrupts the display. There is also Samsung’s approach in which they include a bezel that’s big enough to house the camera and speaker. Lenovo seems to have eliminated all of that entirely.

Chang did not go into more details regarding this phone, so for all we know it could simply be a concept, but the post on Weibo does reference several tech breakthroughs and also 18 patents, so perhaps this design could soon become a reality.
