Boston Dynamics SpotMini Robot Will Go On Sale In 2019

Robotics company Boston Dynamics has released countless videos which reveal just how far along it has come with its technological advancements since its early days. One of its more intriguing creations is the SpotMini robot which kind of looks like a dog. The videos it has released of the SpotMini have shown the robot navigating around an office on its own, opening a door for a second SpotMini robot, and even resisting interference by a human. The company has now announced that it’s going to start selling its SpotMini robot from next year.

Boston Dynamics President Marc Raibert has confirmed at a conference that the company will start selling the SpotMini robot from next year.

It has 10 prototypes of the four-legged robot right now and is planning to build 100 units this year. The company is going to work with its manufacturing partners to increase the production of the robot before it starts selling the SpotMini in 2019.

The one detail that many would likely be most interested in hasn’t been revealed by Raibert as yet. He didn’t say how much the SpotMini will cost. His talk did expand on the possible use cases for the robot which include security patrols and management of construction sites, then again, this isn’t a robot that’s meant to help you around the house.

President Trump Working To Get ZTE Back Into Business

ZTE, a smartphone manufacturer based in China, was effectively put out of business after the United States Department of Commerce banned it from sourcing components from U.S.-based companies for seven years. Not only did that mean that ZTE couldn’t source processors for its smartphones from Qualcomm, it may have lost its Android license as well. For a company that makes Android smartphones powered by Qualcomm’s chips, that’s a fatal blow. However, President Donald Trump has said that he’s now working with President Xi of China to get ZTE “back into business.”

ZTE was slapped with the ban because the Department of Commerce found that it had violated the terms of a settlement in a sanctions violation case that the smartphone maker had lost two years ago.

ZTE confirmed earlier this week that its main business operations have ceased but did mention that it’s working to get the ban modified or reversed. Chinese officials have recently reached out to their counterparts in the United States for a relaxation in the ban.

President Trump tweeted today that he’s working with President Xi to give ZTE a way to get back into business. “Commerce Department has been instructed to get it done!,” he added. Neither ZTE nor the Commercial Department has commented on this latest development.

NASA Sending A Helicopter To Mars

As part of its 2020 mission to put a more advanced rover on the Red Planet, NASA has announced that it’s going to send a small helicopter to Mars. This would make it the first time that an aircraft like the helicopter will be used outside our planet. The Mars Helicopter that NASA has developed is going to travel to the neighboring planet with the agency’s Mars 2020 rover. It’s scheduled to launch in July 2020.

According to NASA, it’s a small and autonomous rotorcraft that is being sent up to showcase the potential of heavier-than-air vehicles on Mars. Controlled remotely, the Mars Helicopter has been designed to fly in the thin Martian atmosphere with the help of its two counter-rotating blades.

It weighs around four pounds and has a fuselage that’s about the size of a softball. The blades will at almost 3,000 rpm which is almost 10 times the rate that’s used by helicopters on Earth.

That’s because the altitude record for a helicopter flying on Earth is around 40,000 feet. Since the atmosphere of Mars is only one percent of Earth, it means that when the helicopter is on the Martian surface its already at an altitude that’s equivalent of 100,000 feet on Earth, explains Mars Helicopter project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory Mimi Aung.

The helicopter will reach Mars attached to the rover which will place it on the ground. Once that’s done, the rover will be instructed to drive to a safe distance from the helicopter so that it can relay commands. Once the batteries are charged and the tests are conducted, controllers here on Earth will pilot the helicopter to take its first flight in the Martian atmosphere.
