Japan Display Unveils High-Resolution Screens For Use In VR

With virtual reality (VR) headsets being more or less up in your face, resolution is important because it means that the pixels are less obvious which in turn can make the experience more realistic and immersive. The good news for those who are PS VR users is that there is a chance that the next-gen VR headset from Sony could get some pretty insane displays.

Japan Display has recently announced the creation of separate 1,001 PPI and 803 PPI displays that they have designed specifically for use in VR. These are incredibly high resolutions which when viewed in close proximity should get pretty damn realistic. Given that Japan Display is part Sony (it’s a joint venture between Sony, Hitachi, and Toshiba), it has been speculated that these displays could potentially be used in the Sony PS VR 2.0 or whatever Sony plans on calling it.

At the moment, the Sony PS VR has a relatively low PPI compared to the competition at 386 PPI versus the HTC Vive Pro which has a 615 PPI. If Sony were to use the new displays from Japan Display, it would certainly allow them to lead by a mile. However there is a catch and that is the 803 PPI display only has a refresh rate of 90Hz, and the 1,001 PPI is the only one that can match the current PS VR’s refresh rate of 120Hz.

Also the size is smaller at 3.25-inches versus the ones used by the PS VR at the moment which has a 5.7-inch display. However the display has been created to be eye-specific LTPS TFT LCDs. Unfortunately in terms of availability, Japan Display only expects them to be shipped out in 2019, which means that if Sony unveils their next-gen PS VR this year, it means that it will not be benefiting from the new displays.

Apple Hit With Lawsuit Over 2016 MacBook Pro Keyboard

According to a recent report, it was revealed that Apple’s use of the new butterfly mechanism on its 2016 MacBook Pro keyboards are failing at twice the rate compared to the previous design. A petition was even launched asking that Apple recall its 2016 MacBook Pro laptops over the keyboard.

Now it looks like the keyboard debacle has been taken one step further because according to AppleInsider, a class action lawsuit has been filed in which it claims that Apple knew about the defects in their keyboards but still chose to ship them out anyway. They also cite how these keyboards failing on them have resulted in trips to an Apple Store to get it fixed, and in the case of laptops out of warranty, costing them hundreds of dollars in the process.

The lawsuit also cites a plaintiff by the name of Zixuan Rao who bought a 15-inch MacBook Pro, only to have problems with the “B” key a month later. Another plaintiff by the name of Kyle Barbaro had his keyboard repaired, only have have it fail a second time a few weeks later. However as by that time, his laptop was already out of warranty and he was told that a repair would cost him a whopping $700 for an unresponsive space bar and caps lock key.

Apple has yet to officially respond to the lawsuit and they have also to acknowledge what could be the reason behind the flaw. However hopefully the escalation will see Apple pay more attention to the keyboard design and fix it in future models. In the meantime you can check out the lawsuit in full on Scribd.

Xiaomi’s Smart Home Devices Now Work With Google Assistant

Xiaomi might not necessarily be the company you think of when it comes to smart home products, but given that the company makes all kinds of products ranging from smartphones, computer, air purifiers, humidifiers, and more, we suppose it’s not really a stretch to think that they might expand into smart home gadgets.

The good news is that if you were thinking of equipping your home with a Xiaomi smart home device or if you already have, then you might be interested to learn that Xiaomi has announced that their devices will now play nicely with Google Assistant. This means that if you use a Google Assistant product, like an Android smartphone or Google Home, you will be able to control the Xiaomi devices through it.

According to Xiaomi, “As we seek to bring even more convenience to our users around the world, we understand that deepening our collaboration with partners is key. With this goal in mind, Xiaomi announced during Google I/O 2018 that our smart home products will now work with the Google Assistant, allowing users to control products through a smart speaker, like the Google Home, or with the Google Assistant app.”

The initially supported products will include the Mi Bedside Lamp, Mi LED Smart Bulb, and Mi Smart Plug, the latter of which is expected to find their way into the US market soon.

‘Minecraft’ Nintendo Switch Cross-Platform Update Arrives Next Month

Late last year, Microsoft announced that Minecraft would be getting an update that would enable cross-platform support. It has been quite a while since the update was announced, but the good news is that gamers won’t have to wait much longer for the update to arrive, at least for the Nintendo Switch.

According to a post on the Xbox website, Microsoft has announced that the Bedrock version for Minecraft will be launching on the 21st of June. For those who already own the Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, the update will be yours for free, but for those who have yet to get their hands on the game, the Bedrock version will be available digitally and in physical retail version as well.

Microsoft writes, “Minecraft will be the first game on Nintendo Switch to feature cross-play support across Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Windows 10 PCs, Android devices, iOS phones and tablets, and VR platforms will all be able to play together for the first time ever. Whether they’re working together to build the home of their dreams or standing shoulder-to-shoulder as they enter the End to take down the Enderdragon, there will always be something for friends to do together, regardless of platform.”

As Microsoft has pointed out, cross-platform will only be available between the Switch, Xbox One, PC, iOS, Android, and VR platforms.

Facebook Reportedly Planning Their Own Cryptocurrency

Bitcoin might be the most popular cryptocurrency at the moment, but it is definitely not the only one. There are plenty of different cryptocurrencies out there and now it looks like Facebook plans on launching their own. This is according to a report from Cheddar who claims that they have heard from sources regarding Facebook’s plans.

The report claims that Facebook had started to study blockchain about a year ago. This seems to line up with an earlier report that claims that Facebook had set up its own blockchain division, which now seems to be leading towards Facebook’s plans to launch their own cryptocurrency in the future.

In a statement made to Cheddar regarding their report, a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying, “Like many other companies Facebook is exploring ways to leverage the power of blockchain technology. This new small team will be exploring many different applications. We don’t have anything further to share.”

That being said, Facebook did not seem to rule out the possibility of cryptocurrencies being part of their future. Speaking at a conference earlier this year, Facebook’s VP of Messenger David Marcus said, “Payments using crypto right now is just very expensive, super slow, so the various communities running the different blockchains and the different assets need to fix all the issues, and then when we get there someday, maybe we’ll do something.”
