BBM Desktop Beta Announced For Android Users

Messenger apps used to exist heavily on computers back in the day where we had the likes of ICQ, IRC, AIM, Skype, and so on. While chat apps for desktops still exist, it seems that there is an increased focus from mobile apps to bring their apps onto desktop. We’ve seen this with WhatsApp, LINE, KakaoTalk, and so on.

Now it looks like BBM is next. According to a report from CrackBerry, it seems that BlackBerry will be launching the BBM Desktop beta for Android users, where basically they will be able to access BBM on their computers in addition to their mobile devices. This is incredibly convenient as it means that users won’t need to keep looking towards their phone to reply messages when they are working on their computers.

However like we said, this beta seems to be only applicable to Android users right now and even then it won’t be open to all. According to BlackBerry, “Selected Android users will see the BBM desktop icon in their Me tab.” BlackBerry had previously tested out BBM for the desktop and we guess progress and reception must have been good for them to continue.

No word on when it will arrive for iOS devices or when it will exit its beta, but hopefully with it currently in beta it means that we’re now one step closer to seeing its release in the near future.

Microsoft Would Like To Bring iMessage Support To Windows

While Apple not be planning on merging its macOS and iOS platforms, the company has introduced some synergistic features where users can send and receive messages on either device, continue surfing websites, and so on. The only drawback is that it is limited between iOS and macOS devices.

However this is a feature that Microsoft would like to see available on Windows as well. Speaking to The Verge in an interview, Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore and Shilpa Ranganathan said that they would be willing to work with Apple to bring iMessage onto Windows. This was during the interview where they talked about Microsoft’s plans to mirror phones to PC.

According to Ranganathan, “Apple does make it a tad harder for messages, but we’re very willing to work with Apple. I want to do this in a supported way with a respect for the ecosystem we’re building on and at the same time make it a delightful experience. Messages is one where we’re not currently where we need to be compared to Android, but we need to work with Apple.”

However given how notoriously closed off Apple is to opening their ecosystem up to third-parties, it doesn’t seem likely that will happen, but it does seem like a feature we’re sure users might appreciate. After all there are plenty of iPhone users who do not necessarily own a Mac, or might use Windows PCs at work or school.

WhatsApp To Increase Time For Revoking Messages

As you probably know by now, WhatsApp has rolled out a feature a while back that allowed users to revoke messages that they sent. Basically it lets users delete messages that they sent by mistake so that both parties won’t be able to see it. However previously the time limit for the recipient of the message was at one day, but now it seems to have been extended.

According to a tweet by WA Beta Info, the time limit has been increased to 1 day 1 hour 8 minutes and 16 seconds. Like we said previously it was one day so the increase is by a little over an hour. Interestingly enough the increase is the same time limit that the sender of the message gets to delete the message.

If this sounds confusing, here’s what it means. When someone sends a message, they have 1 hour 8 minutes and 16 seconds to delete it. The new time extension is aimed at the person who received it, where they now get 1 day 1 hour 8 minutes and 16 seconds to receive the revoke request. This means that anytime after that, the message won’t be revoked.

We’re not sure why there is an extension, perhaps to take into account users who might be traveling and might not have internet to receive the request, but either way it’s something you might want to consider.

Myst 25th Anniversary Collection is Probably as Infuriating as it Used to Be

Way back in the day, I went straight from high school to college into a medical program that saw me going from a broke high-school student to 19-year-old with an actual career making good money. The very first thing I bought with my very first paycheck was a 3DO game system and a copy of Myst. I both loved and hated that game because it was so cool and so hard to play. This was way before you could Google and figure out what to do when you got stuck in a game.

Now, a quarter decade has passed since Cyan’s groundbreaking puzzle game arrived (yes, I feel old now) and a special edition is on Kickstarter called the Myst 25th Anniversary Collection. All of the Myst games will be included, but if you buy it on Kickstarter you will also get some sweet artifacts that won’t be sold again anywhere.

This collection has all seven Myst games, including Myst Masterpiece Edition, Riven: The Sequel to Myst, Myst III Exile, Myst IV Revelation, Myst V End of Ages, Myst Uru, and realMyst Masterpiece Edition. All games have been updated to run on Windows 10 and macOS 10.13. Available artifacts (which vary with the version you buy) include a Myst Linking Book with its own 800 x 480 screen inside featuring flythrough videos of the games. Gehn’s inkwell and pen, digital versions of three Myst novels, and original design sketches from the game.

A pledge of $49 or more gets you all the games. $99 or more gets you all the games for digital download and on DVD along with the Myst book. $169 or more gets digital and DVD games, a Myst book, the LCD Linking Book, and digital extras. $250 or more gets you the pen and ink well and more. The hand-drawn original concept art reward was going for $1,000 but 25 folks gobbled up all those already. The project has already blown through its goal on Kickstarter, so what are you waiting for?
