Researchers create a real cloaking device

Researcher Amanda D. Hanford at Pennsylvania State University has created a real cloaking device that can route sound waves around an object, making it invisible to some sensing techniques.

From the report:

Hanford and her team set out to engineer a metamaterial that can allow the sound waves to bend around the object as if it were not there. Metamaterials commonly exhibit extraordinary properties not found in nature, like negative density. To work, the unit cell — the smallest component of the metamaterial — must be smaller than the acoustic wavelength in the study.

Hanford created an acoustic metamaterial that deflected sound waves under water, a difficult feat. In testing she and the team were able to place the material in water and measure sound waves pointed at it. The resulting echoes in the water suggested that the sound waves did not bounce off or around the material. This means the new material would be invisible to sonar.

Obviously this technology is still in its early stages and the material does not make the objects invisible but just very hard to detect in underwater situations. However, the fact ship captains could soon yell “Activate the cloaking device” as evil, laser-toting dolphins appear on the horizon should give everyone a bit of cheer.

World’s first robot-assisted spinal surgery performed

Surgeons at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have completed the world’s first robot-assisted spinal surgery. The procedure was a long and arduous one to remove a tumor from the neck of a 27-year-old man through his mouth. The procedure took over 20 hours in the operating room over two days. Doctors working on the case feared the risk … Continue reading

T-Rex EV images and details announced

About a month ago we talked for the first time about the T-Rex EV three-wheeler. At the time little detail and no images of the actual vehicle were available. Campagna Motors, the maker of the T-Rex, has now offered up official details and images of the vehicle. The EV in the images is reportedly the first prototype of the electric … Continue reading

SNK Officially Unveils The Neo Geo Mini Console

Last month the folks at SNK teased that they were preparing the launch of a new mini console based on the Neo Geo. Shortly after alleged leaked images made their way online and for those wondering about it, wonder no more because SNK has officially taken the wraps off what they are calling the Neo Geo Mini.

Like we said, the Neo Geo Mini is based on the Neo Geo MVS arcade machine which you can see in the image above. It has been shrunken down, obviously, and it is expected that there will be two versions: a Japanese version and one for international markets. This is similar to what Nintendo has done for its NES and SNES Classic consoles.

In terms of games, it seems that the rumors were right and that the console would come preloaded with 40 games, but exactly what titles are available is unclear, but the images do show off games such as King of Fighters and Metal Slug. There is a HDMI port for those who wish to connect it to a larger display, a headphone jack, and ports for two external controllers. It will also sport a 3.5-inch LCD which means that it should be small enough for you to take it on the go.

There is no mention of pricing or availability, so it looks like we’ll just have to wait and see.

Valve’s Steam Link App Lets You Stream Games Onto Your Phone

Back in the day if you wanted to play a game, you had to make sure that your hardware was good enough to run it. It is still true these days, but companies have been working to come up with ways around that, such as through game streaming where a game is loaded onto a computer that can run it, and then streamed to another device.

For those who are interested in such tech, you might be interested to learn that Valve has launched a new app called Steam Link. This is not to be confused with the $50 Steam Link device, but in practice they both more or less do the same thing. The app will stream games from your computer onto any device that supports it, such as phones.

This means that you could load a game up on your computer and then stream it onto your mobile device. Gamers can even use the Steam Controller to control their games. However this isn’t as simple as it seems as there are some hardware requirements. For starters those on WiFi will need to have a 5GHz WiFi connection.

There is option for ethernet but given that our phones do not come with ethernet ports, this means that WiFi is the only way to go about it. However if you do have the necessary equipment, then do keep an eye out for the app’s launch which should be towards the end of the month.

6.1-inch LCD iPhone Could Use Same Display Tech As LG G7

Word on the street has it that 2018 will not be the year that Apple will be going full OLED. Instead the rumors are claiming that Apple is expected to keep at least one LCD model around in the form of the 6.1-inch iPhone. Now according to new reports, it looks like more details about the iPhone have emerged.

According to Business Korea (via 9to5Mac), it seems that the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone could be using the same display tech as the LG G7. The display is developed by LG and is known as MLCD+ which differs from regular LCDs by adding a white subpixel, ultimately resulting in a brighter display which is one of the features that LG boasted about its flagship handset where it would be capable of topping 1,000 NIT brightness.

This is actually not the first time that such rumors have surfaced because Patently Apple had also offered up similar speculation. We suppose it wouldn’t be a complete surprise when you consider the fact that Apple and LG have been working together for a while now. Plus there have also been rumors that LG was supposed to provide OLEDs for Apple’s iPhones this year.

In any case take it with a grain of salt for now but if the rumors are true, then it looks like the 6.1-inch iPhone could sport a display that might appeal to those who have need for a brighter display.

F1 Race Car Replica Built from Coke Cans Is Sure to Fail Any Crash Test

If you’ve ever wanted to build your own Formula 1 race car out of coke cans, this cool video will show you how. The Q channel recently built a giant Coca-Cola F1 race car using Coke and Coca-Cola Light cans, PVC pipe, and glue. All pretty simple materials to work with.

I would have built the entire thing out of Coke cans though because everyone knows that the diet stuff isn’t as fast. Strike that. I would have used Monster Energy drinks because those will get your heart racing, so they are obviously the speediest. Anyway, it took The Q almost 1000 empty coke cans, 5 different types of glue, over 12 meters of PVC pipe, and over 400 man hours to build this thing.

The scale of the car is roughly 1:1.5 scale compared to the original F1 car. The final result is a very cool and detailed work of art that will NOT stand up to a crash at all. It won’t even stand up to someone getting in it, or even being breathed on the wrong way. It’s still pretty awesome though. Is it bad that I want to see it crushed in a real race? I know, this is why I can’t have nice things.
