This Man Tried To Sell His Facebook Data On eBay

It is no secret that companies such as Facebook and Google collect data on users in order to create ads that are catered towards a user’s preference. While it is no secret, Facebook’s recent data privacy scandal shone more light on exactly how much data the social network and advertisers have of users.

So much so that writer and developer Oli Frost decided that hey, if Facebook is making money off his data, why shouldn’t he as well., right? Frost then decided to export his data using Facebook’s data export tool and put up his information on eBay where he basically auctioned off his information.

Speaking to Gizmodo, Frost said, “I joined Facebook ten years ago and just found out I’ve been selling me data for free all this time. Why shouldn’t I get some of the cash?” However the money he would have made from the sale was not for profit and he was planning on donating it to the EFF.

Unfortunately for Frost, eBay did not look upon his auction too kindly and removed it. According to the message that he was sent, “Some of your listings haven’t followed our Mailing List and Personal Information policy. Your listing is selling an account for Facebook, which is not permitted as most social networking companies have limitations in their terms of service that restrict the artificial boosting of another member’s following or popularity, or the sale of accounts with established followings.”

Snapchat Logins Could Soon Compete With Facebook & Google

Online services these days are starting to integrate more with Facebook and Google, where instead of users having to create accounts from scratch, they can choose to sign into a service using their Facebook or Google credentials, making it a lot faster and easier for users to start using a service/website.

However in the future it is possible that Facebook and Google could get a competitor in the form of Snapchat. According to a report from TechCrunch, it seems that Snap is planning on launching its own developer platform called Snapkit, and one of the features of the SDK is that it could create a “login with Snapchat” option in the future.

This means that in addition to Facebook, Google, or choosing to sign up from scratch, users could choose to login using their Snapchat credentials as well. As TechCrunch points out, Snapchat does appeal to a younger audience and given the fallout that Facebook faced with its data privacy scandal, it is possible that users might prefer to go with Snapchat instead.

Snap has yet to officially announce or confirm anything and declined to comment on the report, so take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully we’ll have more official details soon.

Analyst Predicts $250 Beats-Branded Speaker With Siri At WWDC 2018

Apple’s HomePods is probably one of the most expensive smart speakers in the market today, but that’s not surprising considering that Apple products are usually priced at a premium. Unfortunately it seems that its price could be one of the reasons why not many are adopting the speakers as much as Apple would like.

This has led to rumors that Apple could launch a cheaper set of HomePods in the near future. Those rumors are now backed up by analyst Gene Munster who claims (via 9to5Mac) that Apple will launch a set of Beats-branded speakers at WWDC 2018 that will come with Siri integrated into them.

This echoes an earlier report which suggests that Apple could launch a Beats-branded HomePod, although there are some differences in the reports where the first one suggested a price of $199, while Munster’s report claims that it will be around $250. Also what’s notable is that these might not necessarily be designed to look like the HomePods, and could instead be a set of Beats speakers that comes with Siri.

According to Munster, this won’t “compromise” the HomePod’s $350 offering, meaning that customers who want HomePods will still have HomePods, but those who like the Beats brand will also have that option too. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but with WWDC 2018 coming up soon, we guess we’ll have our answers in the next couple of weeks.

Two New Pokemon Games Announced For The Nintendo Switch

While there has been some Pokemon variants available for the Nintendo Switch, safe to say that many have been anticipating the launch of a Pokemon game that is usually found on Nintendo’s handheld consoles. The good news is that if you’ve been anticipating such a game, you’re in luck.

This is because Nintendo has not only announced one, but two brand new Pokemon games that will be headed onto the Nintendo Switch. These games are dubbed Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! and they are set for a release on the Nintendo Switch come 16th of November, 2018. This echoes an earlier report which hinted at a November release, and it also confirms another report which suggested that the game could borrow some elements from Pokemon GO.

That being said, we should point out that the new Let’s Go titles won’t introduce brand new Pokemon and will instead be based on Pokemon Yellow. The folks at Polygon spoke to director Junichi Masuda who told them, “Let’s Go! Pikachu and Let’s Go! Eevee are kind of inspired and based on Pokémon Yellow version. They had added elements from the animated series, like Team Rocket and the characters that appeared in the animated series. It’s one of those things that made it resonate more with young kids at the time. When we were thinking of a game to go back to … we thought that this would be the next version.”

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing because from what we can tell, the games look fantastic with the use of modern graphics. Players will be able to play the game using the Joy-Con which will support throwing-like gestures to toss the Poke Balls. There will also be a separate accessory in the form of the Poke Ball Plus that can be used in place of a Joy-Con. There is also support for two-player simultaneous play, so if you want to play with a friend that’s possible too.

Players who have been diligently collecting Pokemon via Pokemon GO will also be able to transfer their caught Pokemon onto the Switch a Bluetooth connection. If you have a couple of minutes to spare, you can check out the trailer for the game in the video above.

No Mid-Range OnePlus Smartphones Until At Least 2021

Several years ago, OnePlus launched the OnePlus X which by all accounts was a mid-range handset, at least compared to the OnePlus 2 at that time. Many expected OnePlus to continue churning out similar phones to the OnePlus X, but in 2016 the company confirmed that they were done.

The company would instead choose to focus only on its flagship phones which was an interesting choice given that many Android OEMs tend to release multiple handsets. However if you were hoping to see the company return to more budget offerings, you could be in for a wait because according to OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, they will be sticking to their current strategy for the foreseeable future, or at least until 2021 at the earliest.

The reason behind this is due to cost efficiency, where as it stands OnePlus is still a relatively small company compared to the likes of Apple or Samsung, which means that churning out multiple phones runs the risk of them spreading themselves too thin. Instead OnePlus will focus on its flagship phones and will attempt to shift any/all remaining stock ahead of the next release.

They are also avoiding having old handsets be sold alongside its new ones, as they found that demand for that wasn’t high enough to warrant them to continue making its older phones along with its newer ones.
