Google Maps Wants To Offer More Than Just Directions

Google Maps is probably known by many as a navigational app where users can use it when driving to find their way to their destination. It can also be used when walking about, and in some countries Google Maps can also be used to help find train/bus departure times, where it leaves from, and so on.

However Google wants to go beyond just directions and at Google I/O 2018, they have announced some changes that will be coming to the app. One of those changes is to the Explore tab which has been redesigned to make it easier for users to find recommendations, such as restaurants, cafes, or events that are around them.

There will also be trending lists so that users can see which are the popular places to eat at the moment. These trending lists are based on Google’s own algorithms, local experts, and also from various trusted publishers. Google will also help users keep track of their progress so that users can cross off locations on their lists if they’re looking to completely explore an area.

Google will also display “matches”, which is a score based on how well Google thinks it will resonate with you. This is based on machine learning plus your past experiences, so for example if you favor a particular kind of establishment or cuisine, then your “match” score will be higher. These are just some of the changes that Google will be making to its app which are expected to be applied to both iOS and Android in the coming months.

EA’s Battlefield 5 To Feature Single-Player Mode

While games like Call of Duty and Battlefield are typically known for their multiplayer aspects, there are some who do enjoy the single-player aspects of the game as well. Unfortunately the reports are saying that Activision’s upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 might not have single-player mode and this is something EA might want to capitalize on.

According to EA’s recent earnings report, the company’s CEO Andrew Wilson revealed (via IGN) that the company’s next Battlefield game will feature single-player mode. “With our next Battlefield game, the team at DICE is bringing the intensity of combat to life in new and unexpected ways. Every battle is unique, and every mode brings its own challenges – from the way you interact with the environment around you, to compelling single-player stories, to the next level of large-scale multiplayer that spans across multiple maps and modes.”

We’re not sure if this was always planned or if EA might be looking to capitalize on the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 rumors. After all Call of Duty and Battlefield are pretty much competing for the same player base, so if there is a way for EA to attract more gamers to Battlefield, we’re sure that they will take it.

It is expected that a new Battlefield game will be announced later this year. The rumors are claiming that the next Battlefield game will be Bad Company 3, but EA has yet to make any official announcement, but it is possible that more details could be revealed during E3 2018 next month.

World Of Warcraft DDoS Hacker Sentenced To Jail

World of WarcraftThe problem with games that are based online is that they’re subject to hacks such as DDoS. Unfortunately in Blizzard’s case, several years ago their MMORPG World of Warcraft was subject to such a hack, although the good news is that it appears that justice has been served to the hacker behind it.

According to reports, 38-year-old Romanian Calin Mateias has been sentenced to jail for a DDoS attack on World of Warcraft back in 2010, where he flooded Blizzard’s European servers to prevent his in-game rivals from logging in. According to the Department of Justice, Mateias has been ordered to pay $29,987 in restitution to Blizzard and will also need to serve one year in Federal prison.

The report from the DoJ also reads, “Mateias, using his in-game avatar, often participated in collaborative events, such as ‘raids, where players joined forces to meet game objectives and were rewarded with virtual proceeds or in-game advantages. Mateias became involved in disputes with other players for a variety of reasons, including the division of loot and membership in raid teams.”

This is actually not the first time that Blizzard has gone after hackers of their games. The company has actively sought out legal means to bring down hackers and cheaters. We’ve also been seeing other companies take similar tougher stances, such as with PUBG where hackers of the game were arrested in China.

Users Can Soon Pay Their Bills Through Outlook

Microsoft’s Outlook is probably most commonly associated with being an email service. However as we have seen with Google’s Gmail, an email service can be more than just a place to store emails, such as sending/receiving money. The good news for Outlook users is that it looks like some conveniences will be headed your way soon.

According to an announcement on Microsoft’s Dev Center, it seems that a future update to Outlook will soon let users pay their bills through the platform. “We will soon be introducing payments in Outlook to help users to pay bills or invoices, right in email, without needing to switch to another app or service. Powered by Microsoft Pay, payments in Outlook is a fast and secure way to pay from within email.”

In terms of payments processors, Microsoft has also announced that Stripe and Braintree will be supported at the start, but others are expected to be added in the future. In terms of companies that will support bill payment through Outlook, the onus is on the companies to take advantage of the feature.

This means that not all bills will support this feature, but the option is there for companies to embed the payment action if they choose to. The offer will also not be available to all Outlook users at first as Microsoft plans on rolling it out in phases, so if you are an Outlook user and you don’t see the option available to you, not to worry as it should eventually find its way to you.
