Google Launches Public Android P Beta Program

Google had previously released a developer preview of Android P, the next major update for its mobile operating system, and the company announced today during its I/O 2018 developers conference that the public Android P beta program is live starting today. This means that the average user can now get their hands on the beta version of Android P and take it for a spin well before its final release later this year.

There’s more good news. The Android P beta program isn’t limited to Google’s Pixel handsets. The company confirmed today that the public Android P beta program is open to select handsets from manufacturers such as Nokia, Sony, Essential, Oppo, Xiaomi, and OnePlus.

The company has also made it much easier to get on the beta program. You don’t have to jump through complicated steps in order to get the Android P beta. Once you have signed up for the beta program at this link, you will be able to download the beta firmware through your handset’s normal software update feature.

Do bear in mind, though, that once you do join the Android P beta program you won’t be able to leave it without having to first wipe your phone completely before rolling back to a stable version of Android. If that’s not a concern for you and you own of the compatible handsets, go ahead and take Android P for a spin.

Qualcomm Will Help Get Android P On More Devices Sooner

The fragmentation on Android OS still leaves a lot to be desired but sincere efforts have been made over the past couple of years by Google and its partners to reduce fragmentation on its platform. As part of those efforts, Qualcomm today announced that it supports “fast commercial availability” of Android P, the next major update for Android. What that basically means is that the chipmaker will help bring Android P to more devices sooner.

Qualcomm has worked with Google to implement Android P on select Snapdragon chips. The early access to Android P enabled Qualcomm to optimize its software on Snapdragon 845, 660, and 636 SoCs to ensure that OEMs would be ready to upgrade to Android P at the time of launch.

This will surely go a long way in enabling many manufacturers to quickly roll out Android P on their devices given the fact that Qualcomm supplies chips to quite a lot of OEMs that make Android-powered smartphones.

Some of those OEMs that source chips from Qualcomm include Oppo, Sony, OnePlus, and Xiaomi. They have already announced that they will make the developer preview of Android P available on their devices. Xiaomi also has plans to support the latest release on its Mi MIX 2S and OnePlus on its upcoming OnePlus 6 flagship.

Android P is going to be released later this year but Google has launched a public beta program for it today.
