HomePod Launching In Canada, France, Germany Next Month

It probably goes without saying that Apple will eventually launch HomePod in markets all around the world that they operate in, but more recently we have heard that the company could be gearing up to launch it in France and Germany. For those living in those countries, you’re in luck as Apple has announced the HomePod’s official release date.

According to Apple’s announcement, the HomePod is slated to be released in Canada, France, and Germany come 18th of June which means that these customers only have a couple of weeks of waiting before they are able to get their hands on it. Pricing is unclear for those particular regions, but as it stands the HomePod is priced at $349 in the US.

Right now the HomePod is still limited in its availability where it is only sold in the US, the UK, and Australia. The expansion to Canada, France, and Germany brings the total number of countries the smart speaker is available in to six, although we had previously heard that Apple could also be getting it ready for a launch in Japan, but this particular announcement has skipped on those details.

Apple also announced the release of iOS 11.4 which will bring about AirPlay 2, meaning that HomePod users will be able to link up multiple units of the speakers together for multi-room audio.

AI Could Be Used To Help Predict When Protests Might Turn Violent

Protests can be useful to help bring attention to a certain topic, but sometimes protests can turn violent which is unfortunate, which is why police are usually deployed to monitor protests and to help keep the peace. However whether or not a protest has a chance of turning violent is anyone’s guess, but that might soon no longer be guess work.

Researchers at USC have created an algorithm (via Digital Trends) that scans social media and predicts if an ongoing protest has the potential to become violent. This is done by analyzing the language used on social media platforms, such as Twitter, to indicate if protesters are starting to get worked up and if they might be frustrated enough to resort to violence to get their message across.

Speaking to Digital Trends, Joe Hoover, a USC PhD student who led the study said, “By tracking moralized tweets posted during the 2015 Baltimore protests, we were able to observe that not only did their volume increase on days with violent protests, but also that their volume predicted hourly arrest rates, which we used as a proxy for violence, during the protests. To further unpack these effects, we conducted a series of controlled behavioral experiments and we consistently observed the same effect of moral convergence.”

He adds, “Protests that exhibit high convergence should be handled carefully, as even a small spark of conflict could lead to violence. Perhaps monitoring convergence on an issue could help emergency services devise and implement strategies for promoting peaceful protest.”

Study Finds AI Can Detect Skin Cancer More Accurately Than Doctors

It is not surprising that we’re seeing an uptick in AI being used in the medical field, where even governments are backing such initiatives. There is good reason for this, because unlike humans, computers don’t get tired and they aren’t biased, which is why sometimes AI can help pick up on things doctors miss.

In fact a recent study has found that when a computer was pitted against human dermatologists, it actually performed better when it came to detecting skin cancer. The study found that the AI was able to pick up on 95% of melanomas versus 86.6% in dermatologists. The gap isn’t as big as you would think, but the fact that it was able to pick up on skin cancer close to 10% more than regular doctors, it could mean more lives are saved.

However to be fair, the study was conducted against only 58 dermatologists from around the world, with half being considered “experts” with more than 5 years of experience, while the other half consisted of dermatologists who had 2-5 years of experience, and those who were relatively fresh in the field with under 2 years of experience.

In addition to being able to detect melanomas better than doctors, it also performed fewer misdiagnosis which meant that it spared more patients unnecessary surgery. That being said, AI won’t be replacing doctors anytime soon and are instead meant to help augment treatments where like we said, it can help pick up on things a doctor could have missed.

OnePlus 6 teardown reveals real water resistance rating

The newly launched OnePlus 6 has already been torn down once, and that didn’t exactly end on a high note. That said, iFixit’s process was more interested in checking out how easy, or hard, it is to repair the smartphone outside of official channels. Lyft’s Latest Update Removes Its Apple Watch App

While the Apple Watch might be one of the best-selling smartwatches in the market today, there is a somewhat worrying trend in which we’re seeing more big name companies and developers drop support for the device. For example back in 2017 Google Maps removed support for the Apple Watch.

Instagram followed a year later, and they are not alone as other apps have done the same in the past year or so. Now the latest company to have pulled its Apple Watch app is Lyft, who in a recent update to its app removed the Apple Watch app version from Apple’s App Store. However there is good news and that is the app might not be gone for good.

MacRumors reader Alec told the publication that when they got in touch with Lyft, the company allegedly told them that they are “testing the integration” for a new Apple Watch app, but they do not have a timeline as to when the app might be released. This sounds like Lyft might be working to make their app comply with Apple’s requirements that all Apple Watch apps adopt its watchOS 4 SDK.

This is also one of the reasons why it has been speculated that developers are dropping support for the Apple Watch, as there aren’t enough users of its apps on the smartwatch to justify them spending time and resources into developing it.

Jamie Foxx Set To Play ‘Spawn’ In Upcoming Movie Reboot

Way before the DCEU and the MCU, there were already movies based on superheroes, such as the 1997 live-action Spawn movie. For a movie that’s a little over 20 years old, it actually holds up pretty well, although we have been hearing that there are plans for a reboot which was officially announced last year.

For those who are looking forward to seeing what the movie will bring to the table especially with the advancement in filming and CGI technology, you’ll be pleased that the movie is progressing as it has since found its leader actor. In a report from Deadline, it has been confirmed that Jamie Foxx is set to star as Al Simmons, also known as Spawn, in the upcoming movie.

However if you were hoping for some big budget action movie, that won’t be happening as Todd McFarlane, Spawn’s creator, expects the movie’s budget to be around $10-12 million. He also plans for it to be a dark and gritty movie that could possibly get an R-rating. The R-rating is something that movie makers might have tried to avoid in the past due to it limiting the number of people watching it, but the success of Deadpool and Deadpool 2 has resulted in more film makers to be open to the idea.

As to how he decided to last Foxx for the role, McFarlane said, “Jamie came to my office five years ago, and he had an idea about Spawn and we talked about it. I never forgot him, and when I was writing this script, you sort of plug people in, and he was my visual guy and I never let go of him.”

“When I got done and my agents and everybody was talking about what actor, I said, I’m going to Jamie first and until he says no I don’t want to think about anyone else because I’ve never had anyone else in my head. Luckily, he hadn’t forgotten either. I said, ‘Hey, I’m back to talk about Spawn again, and he was like, let’s do it.’” No word on when the movie will be released so we guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Apple Lists Speakers That Are AirPlay 2 Compatible

With the release of iOS 11.4, Apple has also released AirPlay 2 which means that the HomePod speakers can now be connected to each other for multi-room support. However the HomePods aren’t the only speakers that will take advantage of Apple’s new streaming protocol and if you’re wondering which speakers support the new AirPlay 2, Apple has listed them online.

On Apple’s website, the company has listed the various speakers that support AirPlay 2. It actually covers quite a lot of brands, ranging from Apple’s own Beats brand, to Bang & Olufsen, Bose, Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, Sonos, and more. The full list can be found here.

While there are some speakers that already support daisy chaining for multi-room support, the inclusion of AirPlay 2 means that if you prefer using Apple’s protocol such as when streaming from your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, that will be an option as well. We expect that maybe more speaker brands will eventually add support for AirPlay 2, but for now these are the ones that are compatible so it’s worth taking note of if you plan on buying a set of new speakers.

In the meantime the iOS 11.4 update has just been released so if you’ve yet to update, you can go ahead and do so now.
