Latest Essential Camera Update Brings Speed Improvements

Essential, the new smartphone company founded by Android co-founder Andy Rubin, launched its first smartphone last year. The Essential Phone hasn’t really taken off but that was to be expected from a nascent smartphone manufacturer. One problem that many users complained about was that the handset’s camera app was painfully slow. Essential has now released a new update for its camera app which it says brings speed improvements.

Essential has confirmed via Twitter that it has released an update for the Essential Camera app which will allow users to take “pictures faster across all modes,” and this includes the Burst mode.

The company did release some camera app updates over the past few months. They brought a portrait mode, reduced compression, added Auto-HDR, improved scene rendering, and even added spatial sound in 360.

This latest update is focused solely on speed though. It has a singular purpose of speeding up the operation in the camera app and that’s something that many users will certainly appreciate.

Initial reports suggest that the camera app update does indeed make noticeable speed improvements but it’s still not up to the mark of apps like Google Camera. One can hope that Essential will be able to address all of the speed-related concerns in subsequent updates.

Chainfire Root Apps Reach End Of Life

If you’ve ever been interested in rooting an Android device then you certainly would have heard about Chainfire. That’s what the developer who reated popular root apps like SuperSU and FlashFire calls himself. Chainfire has now announced that all of his root apps have reached end of life which means that he will no longer work on any further development for these apps.

Chainfire confirmed in a Google+ post that all of his root related apps have reached end of life. This move doesn’t come as a surprise, though, as the apps haven’t been updated in quite some time and it was expected that things were headed in this direction.

The developer took a break from everything Android about six months ago to reflect on how he wanted to proceed in the future. “Right now, it does not seem likely I will pick up development of any of my root-related packages or apps again,” he says.

He does mention that he had big plans for some of his root apps but as it stands, he is unwilling to commit the time and energy required to bring those plans to life. “You can’t have it both ways, so it’s all getting shelved, probably indefinitely,” Chainfire adds.

The developer does have some non-root apps that he plans on updating again but cautions that some of these apps will meet the same fate as well. For those who are wondering what the developer is working on these days, he says that he’s currently working on a non-Android-related project that’s taking up most of his time now.

Windows 10 Now Powers Nearly 700 Million Devices

The last we heard from Microsoft regarding the Windows 10 userbase was when the operating system had 500 million users. It has been almost one full year since it revealed that number and Microsoft has announced at its Build 2018 developers’ conference today that Windows 10 now powers nearly 700 million devices across the globe. The company also revealed during today’s event that Office 365 now touts more than 135 million active commercial users.

Microsoft launched Windows 10 back in 2015 and its initial goal was to have the operating system running on one billion devices by 2018. The company soon realized that this was a very ambitious target and sort of abandoned the goal to hit the billion mark by 2018.

Today’s announcement reveals that Windows 10 has gained some 200 million users over the past year so while it has been growing at a decent speed, it goes without saying that we won’t be seeing it hit one billion users across the globe any time soon.

The company has been seeing good interest in its Office 365 subscription plan. It had 120 million active commercial users in October last year and the company announced today that the figure now stands at 135 million.

It hasn’t revealed the figure for Microsoft 365 as yet which is a new subscription service that bundles access to Windows 10, Office 365, and a suite of security and mobile device management tools for enterprise customers.
