Possible Huawei Gaming Smartwatch Patented

It has been a while since Huawei launched a new smartwatch and one of the company’s recent patents is anything to go by, the company might be mulling a gaming smartwatch. Huawei has already released a few smartwatches over the past few years so it wouldn’t be surprising if it came out with a new one. However, the shift to a gaming-focused smartwatch will certainly be an interesting one.

Huawei originally filed this patent in mid-December last year and it was published just a few days ago. It follows up on two similar patents that Huawei filed in 2015 and 2016. They showcase the advancements that the company has made to this idea of having a gaming-focused smartwatch.

The latest variant details a smartwatch that can be controlled via its strap through multiple gestures which may allow users to move characters in a first-person shooter game, for example. The patent details a wide variety of input options such as taps and presses which could be used to play games on the device.

It’s still too soon to be sure about a product like this because just because something gets patented doesn’t mean it will end up seeing the light of day. However, if Huawei does come out with a product like this, it will surely be a major differentiating factor for the smartwatch compared to others on the market.

China Approaches U.S. To Relax ZTE Ban

The United States Department of Commerce recently banned China-based smartphone manufacturer ZTE from sourcing components from U.S.-based suppliers. This means that the company can no longer buy processors from Qualcomm and might even end up losing its Android license. The ban was placed in response to the company’s failure to completely meet the terms of the settlement in a sanctions violation case that ZTE lost back in 2016. A new report claims that Chinese officials have approached their U.S. counterparts in a bid to get the ban relaxed.

Citing two sources with knowledge of the matter, Reuters reports that China has asked the United States to amend the seven-year ban that prevents U.S. companies from doing business with ZTE.

The ban has been viewed by many in China as part of the larger trade tussle that’s taking place between two of the world’s strongest economies. The appeal is said to have been made during trade talks between the two countries earlier this week in Beijing. Senior officials from both sides were present in this meeting.

The report adds that Chinese negotiators have asked their U.S. counterparts to listen to ZTE’s appeal and consider the company’s efforts to improve its compliance. They request that the ban should be amended. U.S. officials have reportedly said that the “attach importance to China’s representations and will report China’s stance to the U.S. president.”

Portable 3D Printer Can Directly Print Skin On A Person

Imagine being able to cover and heal wounds using a 3D printer. That’s the idea that researchers at the University of Toronto when they developed a portable, handheld 3D skin printer. The machine is capable of applying 3D-printed skin on a person. They say that this is the first device that’s capable of forming skin directly on top of a wound in under two minutes. The applications of this technology are vast and could surely be disruptive for this industry.

The researchers say that the handheld 3D skin printer can apply layers of skin tissue directly on a person to heal and cover wounds. They add that while it’s similar to a typical skin graft, it doesn’t require healthy skin from a donor which is then grafted on the patient.

This device basically looks like a white-out tape dispenser which users “bio ink” skin tissue to 3D print skin on the affected area. They have yet to test the printer on a human patient but the researchers have been able to demonstrate the idea on a pig.

The video posted above shows that it can cover and heal the would using the bio ink skin graft. The team is now mulling expanding the size of coverable wound areas and are hopeful that they will eventually be able to start clinical trials on human patients.
