Apple Is Shutting Down Texture’s Windows App

Apple’s acquisitions, at least the ones we have heard and know about, tend to lead to the app/service shutting down. A good example would be Apple’s acquisition of Beats where they eventually shut Beats Music down. Then there was also their acquisition of Workflow where the company later announced that the app would no longer be receiving significant updates.

This is why it doesn’t come as a complete surprise to learn that Apple will be shutting down the Texture app for Windows. According to emails sent to users of the Windows app and in a note in the app, it says that the app will no longer work and will no longer be available in the Microsoft Store after the 30th of June.

Apple does not mention why that is, but this only seems to affect the Windows version of the app. The Amazon Fire, Android, and iOS version of Texture is expected to continue to operate, although we still don’t have any idea as to what Apple might plan to do with it. There has been some speculation that Apple’s acquisition of Texture could be part of the company’s plans to launch a News subscription service.

There have also been rumors that said that Apple was looking to acquire publisher Conde Nast, adding fuel to the fires. In any case only time will tell as to what will become of the Texture app, whether Apple plans on keeping it around or if eventually Texture’s services will be folded into an app/service of Apple’s own making.

Pandora Has Close To 6 Million Paid Subscribers

With so many music streaming services around, there are only so many subscriptions that can be had. Right now it’s safe to say that Spotify is pretty much leading the way in terms of subscriptions, boasting 75 million paid subscribers and 170 million subscribers in total. Apple isn’t that far behind with about 40 million paid subscribers.

However it seems that the competition could have a hard time catching up because according to Pandora’s recent figures that were released in its latest earnings report, the company has revealed that that have about 5.63 million paid subscribers. While this might seem small compared to Spotify and Apple Music, it’s actually a good thing for Pandora as it represents a 19% increase in paid subscribers from the previous year.

Note that this is for Pandora’s paid subscription services, Pandora Plus and Pandora Premium, which means that the total number of actual subscribers could actually be higher than that. However despite the increase in paid subscribers, the company’s earnings report seems to suggest that they are still losing money. They have reported a net loss of $131.7 million, which is an improvement over the previous year’s net loss of $132.3 million. There also seems to be less engagement than before, where listener hours dropped from 5.21 billion to 4.96 billion hours.

To be fair to Pandora, the company is pretty much only operating in the US at the moment. They previously had operations in Australia and New Zealand, but they shut those down in middle of 2017.

iOS 13 Rumored To Include More iPad-Focused Features

iOS 12 isn’t even out yet but it seems that there are rumors about iOS 13 that are making their rounds. This is according to a tweet posted by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in which he revealed that iOS 13 is expected to come with more iPad-focused features such as a redesign of the home screen.

At the moment the iPad’s home screen more or less looks like a larger version of the iPhone. It works but we suppose that there is a lot of space that could be better utilized, which iOS 13 is rumored to do as the home screen is said to be redesigned to be more focused on the iPad. Gurman also claims that an updated Files app will be part of the update, and also some macOS-like features such as tabs within apps.

This is actually an interesting mention when you think about it. Recently John Gruber of Daring Fireball had reported that he had heard from second-hand sources that Apple could be planning cross-platform apps between iOS and macOS in 2019. If the iPad were to gain some macOS-like features in terms of design, this actually makes sense.

Apple had previously shrugged off the idea of merging iOS and macOS, claiming that that wasn’t what users wanted. However cross-platform apps might not be such a bad idea, similar to what Google has done with Android and Chrome OS. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but if true then 2019 could be a good year for iPad users.
