Latest Steam Beta Adds Support For Nintendo Switch’s Pro Controller

Thinking of using your Nintendo Switch Pro Controller on your PC? If you are, you’ll be pleased to learn that Valve has recently updated its Steam Client Beta where support for the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller has been added, which means that you will be able to use it for playing games on Steam.

According to the post on the Steam website, “Greetings from the Steam Controller team. We’re pleased to announce that the latest Steam Client Beta adds support for the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. We think it is a great device with a feature set that pairs nicely with your Steam catalog. The d-pad is ideal for fighting games and platformers and the gyro enhances aim in your action/FPS titles.”

Setting up the Pro Controller seems to be relatively straightforward. Users will first need to opt into the Steam Client Beta and then enable support once they’ve opted in. They will then need to pair their controller with their computer and register it to their Steam account. Valve is suggesting that users calibrate the gyroscope in their controller by selecting the “Calibrate” option.

Once that’s all done, you’re good to go! However this feature is only limited to the Steam Client Beta right now, so if you’d rather not join the beta then we guess you’ll have to wait until the feature makes it to the main Steam Client.

Facebook Can Construct A 3D World Using Just Your Photos & Videos

Sometimes looking at a photo or watching a video as it was filmed doesn’t really provide the viewer with context, like where was the photo or video taken? Was it inside the house? What does the house look like? However it seems that Facebook has created an AI that can create a 3D world just based on photos and videos.

This was revealed during Facebook’s F8 event where Rachel Franklin, Facebook’s head of social VR demonstrated the tech on stage. Basically it takes information from photos and videos, and based on that, it will attempt to construct a 3D world that could potentially be where the photo or video was taken.

The end result? While the “world” itself seems to be made up of splotches, it does seem to be pretty spot on. Is it accurate? We suppose at a glance it does look like it did a good job of roughly reconstructing the room. This is based on tech that Facebook is calling “photogrammetry” which the company claims is a good way to explore your memories.

For example imagine looking at childhood photos while being in a virtual reconstruction of the home you grew up in, or your favorite restaurant, and so on. That being said, Facebook claims that this is a prototype and are keeping mum on their plans on whether or not they will implement it in the future. However in a statement made to Engadget, “We think in the future, people may be able to use technology like this to revisit moments and places that are important to them, with people they care about.”

Petition Launched Calling For Apple To Recall 2016 MacBook Pros

Recently there was a report that found that based on MacBook Pros being sent in for repairs, Apple’s second-gen butterfly keyboard design was twice as likely to fail compared to the keyboards that older MacBook Pros used. This is not the first time we’ve heard people complain about the keyboards, and it probably won’t be the last.

However it seems that at least one Apple customer wants Apple to do something about it, going to the point of launching a petition on Change.org (via Cult of Mac) and asking Apple to recall their 2016 MacBook Pros and later due to the keyboards. The petition was launched by Matthew Taylor who is an author and has been using Apple computers since 1981.

According to Taylor, “Apple, it’s time: recall every MacBook Pro released since Late 2016, and replace the keyboards on all of them with new, redesigned keyboards that just work. Because, these keyboards don’t work. Every one of Apple’s current-gen MacBook Pro models, 13″ and 15″, is sold with a keyboard that can become defective at any moment due to a design failure. The problems are widespread, consistent, and infuriating.”

He also quotes other users from various publications, all of whom have complained about the new keyboards. That being said, whether or not Apple will take this petition seriously remains to be seen. After all it does seem like a bit of an impossible task, but hopefully it will at least gain their attention and hopefully they’ll be able to do something about it.
