Apple Watch Might Have Saved This Teen’s Life

We have heard many stories in the past about how the Apple Watch has helped saved the life of its wearer, thanks to its built-in heart rate sensor. Now it looks like Apple can chalk up yet another victory because in a report from ABC Action News (via Cult of Mac), the Apple Watch could have played a role in saving the life of a teenager.

According to the report, 18-year Florida resident Deanna Recktenwald was at church when her Apple Watch alerted her to the fact that her resting heart rate had hit 190 beats per minute, which is no doubt an alarming figure especially if you’re not doing anything. According to Deanna’s mother Stacey Recktenwald, “It was alarming that the watch was telling us to seek medical attention. I didn’t even know that it had the capability of giving us that alert.”

They then went to a walk-in clinic where the staff confirmed the rapid heart rate. Deanna was then taken to the emergency room at Tampa General Hospital where it was discovered that she suffers from chronic kidney disease, where her kidneys were found to be only functioning at 20% which meant that she would require a transplant in the future.

Stacey later fired off an email to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, thanking him for the Apple Watch’s life-saving feature in which Cook replied, “I’m happy to hear your daughter is fine now. Thanks for sharing her story. This inspires us to keep pushing.” This is not the first time we’ve heard the Apple Watch alert users to potential health problems, but in the past we’ve also seen how users have used it to call for help when their phones were not in reach.

Qualcomm Has Made It Cheaper To License Its 5G Technology

A report from last year revealed that Apple was looking to source from Intel 5G modems for future iPhones. As it stands, Apple sources from both Intel and Qualcomm, but due to their dispute with the latter company, Apple is said to be trying to reduce their dependence on them, although it seems that they still can’t do that completely.

However it seems that maybe as a peace offering, Qualcomm has recently announced that they will be making its licensing fees for 5G technology cheaper in hopes to ease tensions between them and Apple as well as regulators. According to a report from Reuters, Qualcomm currently offers its customers two forms of licensing: a robust one that costs 5% of the phone’s price, and a “lighter” bundle that consists of just standards-essential patents that costs 3.25%.

With the recent announcement, Qualcomm will be including patents for 5G technology inside of its cheaper bundle, and that the 3.25% will only apply to the first $400 of the phone’s net selling price, whereas before it was at $500. As per Reuters’ report, in the past Qualcomm’s customers would typically license from both bundles to avoid potential lawsuits, which means that it would cost them 8.25% of their phone’s price.

However with this new offer, customers will now be able to just select the cheaper bundle and save themselves more money, which in turn could encourage more customers to take up Qualcomm’s offer. Speaking to Reuters, Alex Rogers, the head of Qualcomm’s licensing division said, “It’s a good context for dealing with the two licensee issues we have now.” That being said, recent reports based on job listings have revealed that Apple could be interested in developing its own 5G modems.

Google Pay Is Now Rolling Out For The Web & iOS Devices

One of the features of Apple Pay is the ability for users to pay via their smartphones, Apple Watch, and also via the web. This means that users can use Apple Pay to facilitate their web purchases as long as the site supports it. The good news is that if you’re not an Apple Pay user but a Google Pay user, that functionality is now available to you guys as well.

In an announcement on Google’s blog, “We’re starting to roll out Google Pay on the web from desktop and iOS—which means you’ll start seeing it when you’re shopping on browsers like Chrome, Safari, and Firefox, no matter your device. Plus, if you save a card to Google Pay on your Pixelbook, you’ll be able to use it on the web with another device, like an iPhone.”

Yup, as per Google’s announcement not only is Google Pay being made available for the web, but iOS users will also be able to take advantage of it. It’s an interesting move since it seems like Google is trying to steal some of Apple’s market share, which they might actually do if there is Google Pay in your country/area but not Apple Pay.

These changes are rolling out already so if you are in a country that supports Google Pay, then this is something that can look forward to.
