WhatsApp’s Other Co-Founder Announces Plans To Leave The Company

WhatsApp was founded by Jan Koum and Brian Acton, with the latter departing the company back in 2017 several years after Facebook had acquired the company. Now it looks like WhatsApp’s other co-founder, Jan Koum, will also be leaving the company according to an announcement he shared on Facebook.

According to Koum’s announcement, “It’s been almost a decade since Brian and I started WhatsApp, and it’s been an amazing journey with some of the best people. But it is time for me to move on. I’ve been blessed to work with such an incredibly small team and see how a crazy amount of focus can produce an app used by so many people all over the world.”

It is unclear as to why Koum is leaving apart from what he publicly shared, but for those wondering if this could have anything to do with Facebook’s data privacy scandal that prompted Acton to speak up, The Washington Post’s sources have told them that Koum’s decision to leave was months in the making before the scandal had even hit.

Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has since responded to Koum’s post where he said, “I will miss working so closely with you. I’m grateful for everything you’ve done to help connect the world, and for everything you’ve taught me, including about encryption and its ability to take power from centralized systems and put it back in people’s hands. Those values will always be at the heart of WhatsApp.”

Malaysia’s Fake News Law Has Convicted Its First Person

Fake news is not just a problem experienced in the US, but in other countries as well where it has been found that the propagation of fake news could somehow affected elections. In fact over in Malaysia, a law was passed where it made the dissemination of fake news illegal where they could be sent to jail and/or fined.

Now according to a report from The Guardian, it looks like the country has convicted the first person under its new fake news law. A Danish citizen by the name of Salah Salem Saleh Sulaiman who has been living in Malaysia has been convicted of fake news, where he posted a video accusing local police of taking close to an hour to respond to distress calls after the shooting of a Palestinian lecturer on the 21st of April.

The police had disputed his claims, saying that they only took 8 minutes to respond. Sulaiman has since pleaded guilty and said that the video was made in a “moment of anger”. He also released a statement which reads, “I agreed I made a mistake … I seriously apologise to everybody in Malaysia, not just in the Malaysian police.”

The judge had fined Sulaiman RM10,000 (~$2,549) but because he could not afford the fine, he opted for a one-month jail term instead.

Apple Will Be Driving Around The World To Collect Data For Apple Maps

To say that Apple Maps did not get off to a good start is an understatement. In the early days of the app’s launch, not only did it lead drivers to wrong locations, but there were issues with the UI that resulted in wonky-looking maps. Apple has obviously improved things over time, and it seems that the company has recently shared their plans on how they are collecting data globally.

According to the Apple Maps website, Apple has revealed their plans and dates for when they’ll be traveling in order to collect data for its Apple Maps system. “Apple is driving vehicles around the world to collect data which will be used to improve Apple Maps. Some of this data will be published in future Apple Maps updates.”

Given that roads change from time to time and new roads do open up, these are pieces of data that Apple will obviously need in order to keep their maps up to date. It has also been speculated that this initiative could be part of Apple’s plan to create a Street View-like feature of their own.

Several years ago Mark Gurman claimed that Apple had plans to launch a 3D Street View feature of their own, and that they were working on creating a version that is an improvement of what Google offers, so it is possible that Apple’s efforts at collecting data could be leading up to that.

Sonos Could Be Working On A Smart Home Theater Speaker System

Many are probably familiar with Sonos and their wireless speaker systems that let users link up multiple speakers together for a multiroom effect, and also let them stream from music services like Spotify directly. However Sonos could be branching out because in a report from Variety, an FCC filing has hinted at the company’s plans for a smart home theater system.

This is thanks to the filing that revealed the existence of a HDMI port which is usually featured for home theater systems as it would typically connect to the TV or a display. Sonos has declined to comment on the filing, only to say, “We are constantly looking at new ways to deliver the best possible experiences for our customers. We do not have any additional details to share.”

The filing reads in part, “The model S14 is a high-performance all-in-one home theater smart speaker and part of Sonos’ home sound system.” The mention of it being smart brings to mind digital assistants such as Alexa. It is unclear if Sonos will be integrating Alexa into the S14 or if they could use Google Assistant, or maybe both, but given that the Sonos One features Alexa support, the former does seem to be more likely.

It is unclear as to when Sonos might be launching their new speaker system, but it will be interesting to see what they might offer. As it stands the company already has several speaker products designed for TVs, so perhaps this new set of speakers could be an expansion of that, or it could be something on a larger scale for those who want a more premium experience.
