Google Launches ARCore In China With Xiaomi

Google ARCore is a software platform which enables developers to build augmented reality experiences for compatible devices. ARCore support has been rolled out to several handsets from different manufacturers across the globe but China was one market where this platform was previously unavailable. That changes today as Google has launched ARCore in China as part of a new partnership with Xiaomi.

Google has announced today that ARCore apps are now available in China, however, they will be available for Xiaomi Mix 2S smartphones initially and only through an app in the Xiaomi App Store. Google has said that it’s going to bring more partners onboard for ARCore in mainland China down the road. The company had previously confirmed that Samsung and Huawei are two manufacturers who have demonstrated intent to distribute ARCore apps on their smartphones in China.

ARCore apps can work in China even though Google’s core apps remain blocked in the country because they don’t rely on the company’s cloud. The ARCore technology runs locally on the device so even if the device can’t access Google’s servers, there’s nothing preventing them from running ARCore apps.

The distribution of these apps presents a challenge to Google as well which normally distributes them through the Play Store which happens to be restricted in China. This is what pushes China to ink deals with local partners in order to bring ARCore apps to users in the People’s Republic.

Huawei’s Smart Speaker May Be Called ‘iDol home’

With more and more companies jumping on the smart speaker bandwagon, it wouldn’t be surprising to see if Huawei decided to try its luck in the market as well. It’s already one of the fastest-growing smartphone vendors on the planet so it’s well positioned to try competing in this lucrative market. According to a new report, Huawei’s smart speaker may be launched as the “iDol home.”

Huawei has actually applied for a pair of trademarks for “iDol” and “iDol home” with this leading to speculation that the company has done this in preparation of the launch of its smart speaker. The description of the trademark application mentions that these monikers may be used for a “Voice-controlled smart audio speakers with virtual personal assistant capabilities,” that’s the textbook definition of a smart speaker.

Amid reports that Huawei is also developing a significantly advanced personal assistant, the timing for this report feels right, as that new voice assistant would surely need a best which will be best provided by a smart speaker. Other companies competing in this market such as Amazon, Google, and Apple all have their own digital personal assistants.

Some companies have started making smart speakers that come with Amazon’s Alexa built-in and it’s difficult to believe right now that Huawei will go down this road if it’s planning on launching a smart speaker of its own.

WhatsApp Group Video And Audio Calls Going Live On Android

WhatsApp has long allowed users to make voice and video calls but it was confirmed only recently that the popular cross-platform messaging app will soon let users make group video and voice calls absolutely free. This feature has started rolling out in phases to iOS users and according to reports, some Android users are also seeing this feature go live in WhatsApp on their devices as well now.

It didn’t surprise anyone when Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed at the annual F8 developers’ conference a few weeks ago that group video and voice calls are coming to WhatsApp. This feature had actually been seen before in countless leaks and dives into the app’s code. WhatsApp is now gradually making the server-side change that enables this functionality for users on both iOS and Android.

Initial reports were that the feature was only available to some iOS users but now reports are coming in from Android users who are seeing the group video and voice call functionality on the latest version of WhatsApp beta 2.18.162.

Starting a group video or voice call is simple enough, just tap on the add contact icon at the top right of the screen when you’re already in a call with someone and then choose which contact you want to invite. The feature is said to be going live slowly for users so it might take a while before WhatsApp’s billion-plus users all get it.
