Metal-elastomer composite self-heals when damaged

Researchers have made a new breakthrough that could have significant implications for robots of the future. The breakthrough is a new metal-elastomer composite material that can self-heal and create new electrical connections that bypass damaged areas. The new material has uses outside of robotics as well with applications in stretchable circuits, soft machines, bio-inspired robots, and wearable electronics. The material … Continue reading

Essential PH-1 updates shows why we need more Essential phones

Andy Rubin took a big risk. The father or Android, as he has been called, tried to out-Google Google in making a phone worthy of being the Android poster boy. But while it may have mostly succeeded in creating an identifiable product, it has arguably failed to sell it. Despite the early investments, Essential is a sinking ship and it … Continue reading

Triple Lens iPhone Camera Could Allow For 3D Sensing

The Huawei P20 is an interesting phone as it is the first smartphone with a triple lens camera on the back. The dual lens setup has been popular for the past couple of years, so Huawei really broke the mold with the P20, but it seems that other smartphone makers could be following suit, such as Apple.

We have been hearing rumors that Apple is considering launching a triple lens iPhones , and now a report from Taiwan’s Economic Daily News (via MacRumors) has revealed additional details about what the third lens could be used for. According to the report, the third lens is said to help the iPhone achieve advanced 3D sensing via stereoscopic vision, meaning that it will let the camera capture images of a single object from different angles.

This could be used for augmented reality purposes which actually doesn’t really come as a surprise given Apple’s interest in the technology. This is actually not the first time we’ve seen smartphone makers explore the use of phones for augmented reality. Lenovo and Google worked together on a phone for Project Tango, but it never quite gained commercial traction.

The report also claims that the third lens on the iPhone could be used to provide enhanced zoom capabilities. In any case it’s probably best to take these reports with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Are we starting to go a little overboard with the cameras on our smartphones?

New Report ‘Confirms’ Pegatron Will Manufacture Apple’s ARM MacBook

According to a recent report from 9to5Mac, it was revealed that Apple was working on a new project codenamed “Star”. From what we can tell, it sounds like a new MacBook that combines features of iOS and macOS and is also expected to run on an ARM processor, something that we’ve actually been hearing about for a while now.

In the previous report, it was reported that Pegatron would be the one manufacturing the computer and it seems that this particular rumor is gaining traction. A new report from DigiTimes (via 9to5Mac) is now also claiming the same thing, where Pegatron has been tasked by Apple to make its ARM MacBook.

It is unclear if Pegatron’s orders are to mass produce the computer, or if they have simply been tasked to manufacture prototypes as per the previous report. However given that Apple and Pegatron have worked side by side in the past for various Apple products, it’s not surprising that Apple has turned to them once again.

That being said, we’re not sure how far along Apple’s ARM MacBook is in terms of development. We have heard that Apple could start phasing out its Intel based MacBooks in 2020, so if are still thinking about buying a new MacBook, it seems that you’ll still have time to enjoy it fully.

Pandora Launches $15/month Family Subscription Plan

Music streaming individually is not particularly expensive at around $10 a month. However imagine if you have a family of five, this means that if everyone were to subscribe it would cost $50 a month, and this is where we’re seeing companies offer its subscribers a cheaper alternative in the form of family plans.

We’ve seen Apple and Spotify offer up family plans, but if Pandora is more up your alley, then you’ll be pleased to learn that Pandora has also announced their own family plan. Dubbed the Premium Family plan, this plan will cost users $15 a month which puts it on par with other music streaming services.

With this family plan, users will be able to grant up to six family members access to Pandora’s premium service. This means that there will be no ads and will offer up better quality audio streaming. Users who are already subscribed to the regular individual plan can switch plans at anytime, just head on over to the Settings menu, hit “Switch Plans”, and they’ll be good to go.

So far Pandora isn’t quite up there with the rest of the streaming platforms with the company recently confirming that they have a little over 5 million paid subscribers, but it is possible that this new family plan could encourage more users to hop on board.
