Apple’s New Device Family Reportedly Combines iOS And Mac Features

A sparse report claims that Apple is working on a new device family under the codename “Star,” adding that the device is going to combine technology from both iOS and Mac devices. The company is reportedly testing multiple prototypes and it’s as yet unclear what the form factor of this device is going to be. The report doesn’t contain a lot of details so it’s a bit difficult to fill in the blanks at this point in time.

As per the report, the prototypes being tested include a touchscreen display, GPS, compass, water resistant housing, and SIM card slot. It’s also added that a small batch of these devices have been manufactured by Pegatron, an Apple supplier, and shipped to the company’s HQ in Cupertino.

Since the report doesn’t mention key details such as processor design, form factor, screen size, and whether or not it has a keyboard it’s difficult to predict where this device might fit in Apple’s lineup. There’s speculation, though, that perhaps this device is the much-rumored ARM MacBook that Apple is working on or perhaps it’s a notebook powered by iOS. The report does mention that the device doesn’t run full-fledged iOS or macOS but rather what’s claimed to be a “derivative” of iOS.

It merits mentioning here that since the report is light on the crucial details, it’s important to take this information with a grain of salt for now. Until there’s more concrete evidence to go on, it’s a bit difficult to believe at this point in time that there’s a new family of devices in development over at Apple that are entirely different from its existing lineup.

Fortnite Made Nearly $300 Million Last Month

Battle Royale games have become increasingly popular over the past few months and Fornite is a perfect example of that. It’s one of the most popular battle royale titles out there much like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Fortnite is also available on a variety of platforms and it continues to do good. How good? Well, the game made almost $300 million in April alone.

The latest data from SuperData Research, a firm that tracks digital game sales, reveals that Fortnite made $296 million in April alone. This figure includes sales from the PC, mobile, and console version of Fortnite.

That’s almost double the $126 million it made in February this year. It was back in February this year that Fornite surpasses PUBG in monthly sales for the very first time.

It is there not surprising that Fortnite is at the very top of Superdata’s console chart and at number five on the PC chart, several positions ahead of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The firm mentioned in its report that Fortnite “once again it broke the record for most additional content revenue in a single month by a console game.”

The recent launch on mobile has also contributed to these earnings. Fortnite was widely released on iOS in the first week of April after initially being launched in beta version in mid-March. The title is due for release on Android as well later this summer which will only serve to increase the popularity of this game.

Your iPhone’s NFC Chip May Soon Let You Unlock Doors

There’s not much that you can do with the NFC chip in your iPhone currently aside from making purchases through Apple Pay. However, if a new report is to be believed, Apple will soon let users do much more with the NFC chip inside their iPhones. For example, it may allow users to unlock doors through the near-field communication chip.

The Information reports that Apple is going to reveal a major update for the NFC chip in iPhones at its annual developers’ conference next month. The update will enable iPhones to unlock smart doors and even pay for fares on public transportation.

The scribe adds that Apple employees already have access to these new features and that they have been using their iPhones to access offices and buildings at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. It’s already possible to open smart locks using Bluetooth through an iPhone but the NFC chip is widely believed to be a more secure option so it’s good to see that Apple is considering opening it up to all users.

It’s not like these new features will be limited to just the recent iPhone models. The company’s iPhones have had NFC chips as far back as 2014 so these features may also be offered on those iPhones as well through a simple software update after they are officially confirmed.

Apple’s next Worldwide Developers Conference will take place on June 4th.

God Of War Sells 5 Million Copies In First Month

It was already clear even before the title was announced that God of War was going to be a hit. Fans of the franchise had long been waiting for this title to arrive and when it did, they went and picked it up in droves. Sony has revealed that God of War sold more than 5 million copies in its first month after launch.

Sony previously announced that God of War had actually become the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive title ever after the game sold more than 3.1 million copies in the first three days alone.

It has now been over a month after the title first came out and Sony revealed during its Investor Relations day that the title has been an absolute hit. Sony Interactive Entertainment president John Kodera mentioned that the game has sold more than five million copies during the first month alone. That’s sales to end customers meaning, not shipments.

When you consider that these figures are for a game that’s strictly single-player and exclusive to one platform, PlayStation 4, you realize that this is indeed a significant achievement. Sales of the title will only continue to grow in the months to come, even if they don’t sell five million copies every month, so it’s safe to assume that God of War will sell many million units more by the end of this year.
