Driver Of Uber’s Self-Driving Car Was Watching Hulu Before Crash

Like other companies that are testing their self-driving cars on public roads, Uber also has a human safety driver behind the wheel at all times. One of the company’s autonomous cars in Tempe, Arizona was involved in a crash this March which led to the death of a pedestrian. A new report released by the police mentions that Rafaela Vasquez, the safety driver, was watching Hulu on her phone just before the accident happened.

Uber’s self-driving car struck 49-year old Elaine Herzberg at 39 mph as she was crossing the street. The car wasn’t able to avoid her and since the safety driver was apparently distracted, she didn’t step in to prevent the accident from happening.

The report by the Tempe Police Department mentions that Vasquez’s Hulu account was watching the show for 42 minutes before the crash. This suggests that Vasquez likely started streaming the show not long after starting the drive.

It goes on to add that the crash was “entirely avoidable” if the safety driver had been paying more attention to the road. No charges have been filed as yet but there’s a possibility that she may face charges of vehicular manslaughter.

The video of the crash that was previously released had Vasquez looking down in front of her just seconds before the crash. She had initially told investigators that she was “monitoring the self-driving system interface” which is displayed on the iPad that’s mounted on the car’s center console.

The Best Mario Game Ever

With all of the various Super Mario Bros. and related games out there, game fans have lots of choices for their favorite Mario game. But what if you could combine them all into a single game? That’s exactly what video maker 4096 decided to do, mashing up levels from numerous Mario games into a giant connected game level.

The tricky video features some of the Italian plumber’s many appearances, along with his progenitor, Jumpman, who first turned up in the arcade in Donkey Kong, then made his official debut in Mario Bros.

Check out the all-too-short video clip below:

Nintendo, you really need to make this into a game so we can play through a single endless level comprised of every Mario game ever. I’d pay good money to play that.

Galaxy S10 May Ditch The Iris Scanner

Samsung introduced the iris scanner with the Galaxy S8 a couple of years ago and kept the component for the Galaxy S9 as well. However, if a new report is to be believed, Samsung might ditch the iris scanner for the Galaxy S10. The company’s new flagship smartphone is due early next year and it may not have an iris scanner due to the display-based fingerprint sensor.

Several reports over the past few months have also claimed that the Galaxy S10 is going to have a 3D facial recognition module as well. The module will enable the company to offer a more secure facial recognition feature which coupled with the display-based fingerprint sensor will essentially make the iris scanner redundant.

It has long been rumored that Samsung is going to introduce a display-based fingerprint sensor with its flagship smartphones but the company hasn’t done that as yet. Some reports have even suggested that the Galaxy Note 9 might feature it but chances are that the company will hold off on this technology until the Galaxy S10 next year.

The possibility exists, though, that the Galaxy S10 may retain the iris scanner is Samsung is unable to get the 3D scanning module ready in time for the Galaxy S10. Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything about its new flagship smartphone at this point in time so it would be best to take these reports with a grain of salt.

Bethesda Files Lawsuit Against Westworld Game For Glaring Similarities

It has only been a few days since the Westworld Mobile game was released for smartphones and those who have taken the title for a spin have remarked that it feels quite similar to Fallout Shelter. If you’ve played both games then you will be aware that they are quite similar to each other which is why Bethesda has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. and Behavior Interactive, the developers that were contracted to make Fallout Shelter.

Warner Bros. contracted Behavior Interactive for Westworld Mobile as well and Bethesda claims in its lawsuit that some of the IP used in the new game is the same that was used for Fallout Shelter.

The Westworld game even has a telling bug which Bethesda mentions in its lawsuit. “The identical problem appeared in initial versions of FALLOUT SHELTER but was addressed before FALLOUT SHELTER was released to the public,” its filing says.

Bethesda believes that this an indication that both games were developed using the same source code aside from additional similarities which include interface actions and geometry features. Bethesda claims that Behavior was exclusively contracted for the work that it did on Fallout Shelter and it owns all of the IP related to the game.

Bethesda has filed the lawsuit in the US District Court for the District of Maryland and it wants the Westworld title to be prevented from distribution. It’s also making monetary claims.

Facebook Developing ‘Your Time On Facebook’ Feature

Many tech companies are building features into their services now so that their users can get more insights into the time that they’re spending. Google is building such features into Android and it was recently discovered that Instagram is developing this as well. Now it appears that its parent company is jumping on the bandwagon as well. An unreleased feature has been spotted in the Facebook app which reveals that the social network is building a “Your Time on Facebook” feature.

Jane Manchun Wong, an engineer who previously discovered this feature in the Instagram app, made this discovery in the Facebook app for Android. The screenshots show that the feature will inform users about the average time per day that they spent on Facebook in the last week.

The feature will also offer time management options so they can set reminders when they reach a daily limit and can also choose which Facebook notifications they receive. This information will help users manage the time that they spend on the site.

Facebook has since confirmed to TechCrunch that it’s developing this feature but the world’s largest social network hasn’t confirmed at this point in time when it’s going to launch this feature and whether it’s going to be released for all users.
