Tesla Sues Former Employee For Hacking Confidential Information

Electric car manufacturer Tesla is suing a former employee for $1 million, alleging that the man in question hacked its confidential and trade secret information which was then leaked to third parties. The company has also claimed in documents filed in court that Martin Tripp, the employee in question, also leaked false information to the media. Tesla has filed the lawsuit against its former process technician Tripp today in Nevada.

The lawsuit was filed after Musk sent an internal email about a recent factory fire and hinted at possible sabotage while another email mentioned that he had found the possible saboteur.

The lawsuit mentions that Tripp has “admitted to writing software that hacked Tesla’s manufacturing operating system (“MOS”) and to transferring several gigabytes of Tesla data to outside entities.”

The data that was leaked is said to include countless photos and a video of Tesla’ manufacturing systems. It alleges that Tripp gave false information to the media. In one case, “Tripp claimed that punctured battery cells had been used in certain Model 3 vehicles even though no punctured cells were ever used in vehicles, batteries or otherwise,” according to the company.

Tesla hasn’t commented on this lawsuit as yet and it remains to be seen how this matter will play out in court.

Instagram Crosses One Billion Users

Another Facebook-owned service has now crossed the one billion mark. Instagram revealed during an in-office event today that the photo and video sharing service now has more than one billion users across the globe. The last time we heard usage figures from the company was in September 2017 when it had 800 million users. At that point, it had gained 200 million users compared to the preceding year. It appears that Instagram has kept its growth rate of about 200 million users per year in this period as well.

It was reported last year that the user growth had been driven by Instagram’s Stories feature which it more or less copied from Snapchat. It’s unclear what feature has driven the recent addition of 200 million users to the service. Instagram has expanded the features that it offers by enabling users to add polls, emoji sliders, and GIFs to their posts.

It’s clear, though, that the direction that Instagram has taken over the past couple of years has paid dividends for the company. It’s steadily growing while leaving Snapchat behind in the dust. Snapchat continues to try to grow its user base which was recently pegged at 191 million daily users.

Instagram’s daily active users will likely be more than that and it’s certainly showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
