You Can No Longer Book Uber Rides Within Google Maps

Last year Google announced that Uber would be integrated within Google Maps. This meant that while searching for location of places, users would also be able to hail an Uber within Google Maps itself. This meant less steps for users which could also help drive the number Uber rides.

However as spotted by Android Police, it appears that users will no longer be able to hail an Uber from Google Maps. Google has confirmed this in a support page where they write, “You can no longer book Uber rides directly in Google Maps. But you can still look up the route in the Maps app and then request the ride from the Uber app.”

Google does not provide any reason why Uber integration was pulled, but Android Police notes that Uber’s integration was actually pulled from Google Maps on iOS back in the summer of 2017, but for some reason it continued to remain available within the Android version of Google Maps, at least until now.

However Google Maps will still allow users to book an Uber through the Uber app, so you will have to install the Uber app on your phone if you are still planning to try an book an Uber while using Google Maps. Sure, it’s a couple of extra steps but it’s not exactly a deal breaker.

WHO Calls Compulsive Gaming A Mental Health Problem

Last year the World Health Organization (WHO) decided that they would classify “gaming disorder” as a mental health issue. Unsurprisingly there were some who disagreed with this, but now it looks like the WHO is back with a new mental health problem that they have classified, which according to the organization is “compulsive gaming”.

There are some who have praised the WHO’s initiative, claiming that it will help identify those who might be addicted to games early on, such as those in their teens or who are young adults who might not seek help themselves. According to Dr. Henrietta Bowden-Jones, a spokeswoman for behavioural addictions at Britain’s Royal College of Psychiatrists, “We come across parents who are distraught, not only because they’re seeing their child drop out of school, but because they’re seeing an entire family structure fall apart.”

However just like the WHO’s previous classification, there are some who disagree with this decision and claim that such a move may risk stigmatizing younger players. According to Dr. Mark Griffiths who has been researching the concept of gaming disorders for the past three decades, “Video gaming is like a non-financial kind of gambling from a psychological point of view. Gamblers use money as a way of keeping score whereas gamers use points.”

More Reports Hint At Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Packing 512GB Of Storage

Pretty much all smartphones on the market today cap out at 256GB of native storage. This can be expanded on some phones via microSD, but like we said we’re referring to native storage. However the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 9 could break the mold and feature 512GB of storage.

We’ve been hearing this rumor for a while now, but it looks like there could be evidence that this is true. This is according to a couple of tweets (via SamMobile) that shows alleged listings of the handset that mentions 512GB of storage, while another tweet claims that the 512GB variant could be limited to certain markets such as Korea and China.

It’s hard to tell if these claims are true, but it should be pointed out that back in December last year, Samsung announced that they had begun mass producing 512GB of embedded storage. We’re not sure why the Galaxy S9 did not receive the new storage option, perhaps it was too late in the development cycle, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung were to take advantage of this and offer it in the Note 9.

In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but if you feel that even 256GB of storage is too little for your liking, the Note 9 could help with that.

This simple robot offers more cowbell

Fellas, you’re gonna want that cowbell. And what better way to get that cowbell than with an automatic cowbell-playing robot that uses simple components to create a musical experience like no other. The system, built over at Adafruit, includes a simple Arduino controller, a potentiometer to control the speed of the cowbell hammer, and a few audio systems to play back some BÖC and the immortal words of The Bruce Dickinson: “More cowbell.”

It even includes a controller to activate a fog machine for a little extra rock and roll.

You can download the code for the system here and there is a full build guide here. Ultimately this is one of the silliest DIY projects I’ve seen in a while but, as you may recall, the only prescription for certain fevers is obviously more cowbell.

MIT smart power outlet can identify dangerous electric spikes

The engineers at MIT have developed a smart electrical outlet that can learn what appliances are plugged in and tell dangerous electric spikes from spikes that are benign. MIT says that nuisance trips are things like your vacuum turning off unexpectedly or a lamp going off when your AC unit turns on. Those trips often happen when a detector installed … Continue reading
