This Is How Apple Could ‘Fix’ 3D Touch

One of the supposed “revolutionary” features introduced in the iPhone 6s is 3D Touch. It was supposed to be a new way for users to interact with their phones beyond just pressing on the display. However it’s safe to say that 3D Touch was not as well-received compared to other iPhone features, but according to UX engineer Eliz Kılıç, she has an idea on how to fix it.

In a post on Medium, Kılıç points out that one of the problems with 3D Touch is that it’s not always obvious that it’s there. This is because all the buttons and app icons look the same regardless of whether 3D Touch support is offered or not. She suggests that visually distinguishing 3D Touchable buttons could be one way to encourage users to adopt the feature, like in the screenshot to the right that shows markings on buttons that indicate that 3D Touch is supported.

This means that when users see the markings, they know that 3D Touch is supported and they can check it out to see what kind of peek/pop features they can use with it. Right now it’s pretty much a guessing game where users don’t know if the app they’re using supports the feature, and having to go through every single app seems rather inefficient.

As Kılıç succinctly points out, “What would happen if we decide to make all links same color and style as the regular text? People would not know what to click on right? Why is 3D Touch be any different? We rely on our vision to decide actionability before anything else. If you can’t distinguish 3D Touchable buttons from those that are not, how are you supposed to know you can press on them?”

That being said, whether or not Apple takes up her suggestion is anyone’s guess, but we’re sure that many can probably agree that 3D Touch could stand to be improved upon.

OnePlus 6 Update Will Improve Its Call Quality

Our phones have definitely evolved to do many things, such as take photos, play music, surf the web, play games, used for augmented and virtual reality, but at the end of the day, it is still a phone which means that it needs to make phone calls, otherwise it wouldn’t really be appropriate to call it a phone, right?

This is why call quality is important, although sometimes it is also a feature that can be overlooked. The good news for OnePlus 6 users is that if you’ve found the phone’s call quality to be a bit lackluster, you’ll be pleased to learn that the company has recently issued an update that will bump OxygenOS up to version 5.1.8, where one of the “fixes” is towards improving the call quality.

In addition, the update is also expected to fix various system stability issues (which OnePlus does not mention in detail), along with improved network stability and general bug fixes. As OnePlus notes, this update is being pushed out in incremental stages which means that if you don’t see it yet, not to worry as it should eventually find its way to you as OnePlus claims that a broader rollout should be in the next few days.

Extremist Groups Are Reportedly Starting To Turn Towards Google+

Thanks to social media, various minority groups now have a voice and platform to share their thoughts and opinions. However the downside is that it has given everyone, good or bad, a voice. This has proven to be a problem as extremist groups have been using such platforms to spread their hate and propaganda.

However companies such as Facebook and YouTube have taken active steps to remove such content, but unfortunately it feels like a game of whack-a-mole because according to a report from The Independent, those extremist groups have reportedly found a new home on Google+, Google’s somewhat forgotten social media network.

Google has confirmed The Independent’s findings in a statement which reads, “We have clear policies against violent content as well as content from known terrorist organisations and when we find violations, we take swift action. We have a team dedicated to keeping violent content and hate speech off our platforms, including Google+. And while we recognise we have more to do, we’re committed to getting this right.”

While Google+ is still very much alive and well, it’s safe to say that never quite achieved the reach and fame that Facebook or Twitter had. It is unclear what Google’s plans are for Google+ in the future.

SculptVR for PS VR brings serious creation tools

When it comes to major, non-mobile VR platforms, there are often only two names thrown around: VIVE and Oculus. Less known is an admittedly more restricted VR platform, one that requires you to have a very specific hardware. That is PlayStation VR, PS VR for short, one of the youngest in the market. Its selection of apps has been pretty … Continue reading

While not exactly numerous, there is no severe dearth of Android One devices, at least outside the US.
