Intel’s New Cellular Modem Could Reduce Apple’s Reliance On Qualcomm

Have you ever wondered why sometimes the same phone might feature slightly different components? One of the reasons is because of the different technologies that carriers use, such as GSM versus CDMA, in which phone manufacturers will need to create variants to ensure that their phones work on either.

However it seems that Intel could have the answer, according to a report from AppleInsider who has confirmed that the company has begun to produce the XMM7560 modem. This was also confirmed in a report from the Nikkei Asian Review where Asha Keddy, Intel’s vice president of technology, systems architecture and client group told the publication, “XMM 7560 [modem chips are] now in the process of being deployed… It is in trial and mass production.”

What this modem does is that it effectively works with both GSM and CDMA, meaning that companies such as Apple will no longer have to source modems from different companies, thus reducing their reliance on Qualcomm’s technology as both companies are currently in a legal battle with each other.

That being said, it seems that we probably shouldn’t expect Apple to drop Qualcomm entirely so soon. Qualcomm is still expected to continue supplying components to Apple, but previous reports have indicated that Qualcomm is playing a much smaller role now than before, where they will supply 30% of the necessary components while Intel will fulfill the remaining 70%. We expect that this number will grow even smaller in the years to come.

Nintendo Says Labo Sales Have Met Their Expectations

Earlier this year Nintendo unveiled the Labo. It does feel a tad niche and we’re sure that there are some who are questioning the company’s decision. However it seems that the Labo has actually done pretty well, or at least well enough according to Nintendo’s standards. This is according to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime who spoke to Forbes.

When asked if the Labo has met the company’s expectations, he replied in the affirmative. “So it’s absolutely met our expectations, and to put this in perspective, we see Nintendo Labo as a title and a platform that will sell for extended periods of time, much like we experienced with Brain Age on the DS or Wii Fit on the original Wii.”

For those who are unfamiliar with the Labo, these are basically a set of DIY kits made out of cardboard that can be put together and paired with the Nintendo Switch. From there users can program it to do a variety of things. For example we’ve seen how some users have turned the Labo into a controller for an electric wheelchair, or used as musical instruments.

However like we said, it is a pretty niche kind of toy/game but it is an interesting initiative by the company. Exactly where it will be headed remains to be seen, but so far so good.

Sonos Open To The Idea Of Integrating Siri Into Its Speakers

We know that Sonos has integrated Alexa into its speakers and that’s largely thanks to Amazon who decided right out of the gate that they would make Alexa available to third-party developers and companies. However not everyone likes or wants to use Alexa as some might prefer Google Assistant or even Siri.

Speaking of Siri, the semi-good news is that if you wanted to see a Sonos speaker with Siri, it seems that the company is open to the idea. Speaking to The Verge, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence’s comments seem to suggest that if Apple were to allow it, they wouldn’t mind integrating it.

According to Spence, “I think, at this point, Apple needs to decide if they’re going to be opening Siri to third parties, but we have a good relationship with Apple, and we’ve had some conversations on this and look forward to having more.” As it stands Apple has made Siri available to developers, but perhaps not on the level that Sonos was hoping for.

At the moment for those who are seeking a set of speakers that does feature Siri integration, your best (and only) bet would be the HomePod. This also means that perhaps Apple doesn’t want other speakers to use Siri as it would make the HomePod less compelling, but who knows, things could change in the future.

Fox Comes Up With A Way To Keep Viewers Tuned To Ads

Ads can be annoying when you’re watching TV shows. This is because they interrupt the flow of the show, which is also why platforms like Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu are gaining steam quickly due to their lack of ads in their shows. However companies such as Fox need to make money, and they think they might have figured out a way to do so.

In a report from Variety, what Fox plans to do is they are hoping that interesting/compelling ads are a way to keep viewers watching. How will they do this? This will be accomplished through a series of ads called “Unbreakables” which are short and sponsored films that highlight people who have overcome adversity.

Basically the idea is that with these short films, Fox is hoping that it will be interesting enough to keep viewers glued to the screen as opposed to channel hopping away. Of course we suppose that this could still happen if viewers have already seen the ad a couple of times, but it could at the very least persuade viewers to keep watching.

Fox is also hoping that this will give brands a chance at “storytelling”, so not only will these ads help to promote a product/service, but could also be interesting at the same time. Whether or not this will work remains to be seen.

Amazon Mayday live video support silently ending

It’s probably quite telling when a feature that was launched with much fuss and fanfare is suddenly being retired without even a whisper. Then again, Amazon’s Mayday video calling customer support feature has been around for five years, which is a long time for something that may have ended up not being that successful beyond its first year. It may … Continue reading
