Apple Furthers Their Self-Driving Car Initiative With New Hires

For a while we’ve known about Apple’s interest in self-driving cars and the technology behind it. We’re not sure what the company plans to do about it, but whatever the company is planning for the technology is certainly progressing thanks to a recent hire in the form of Jaime Waydo, a senior engineer who previously worked with Waymo and was also at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Speaking to The Information (paywall), Waydo’s former co-workers told the publication that she was “instrumental” at the company. To be more specific, Waydo checked the safety of Waymo’s prototypes and also helped to coach the company when they started conducting real-world road tests in Phoenix, Arizona. When at NASA, one of her accomplishments was developing one of the agency’s Mars rovers vehicle.

It is unclear what Waydo’s position will be at Apple, but given her work at Waymo, it is possible that Apple is trying to cover all their bases when it comes to safety features of self-driving cars, especially with recent incidents like the one involving Uber. Like we said it’s anyone’s guess as to what Apple plans to do with its self-driving tech.

Earlier rumors suggested that Apple could get into building cars, but it has been pointed out that this could be too big of an undertaking even for a company as big as Apple. An alternate possibility is that Apple could simply be looking to develop the technology and license it out, but either way we’ll just have to wait and see.

University Of Alabama Students Can Now Use Apple Watch As Student IDs

Considering that our lives are filled with all kinds of gadgets, it makes to streamline certain things. For example pilots are starting to make the shift from paper manuals to iPads, and we’re seeing the same in sports where coaches are using tablets for playbooks. Now it looks like similar conveniences are coming to students.

The University of Alabama has recently announced and confirmed that students will soon be able to use their Apple Watch in place of student IDs. This initiative was actually announced at WWDC 2018 when Blackboard came onto stage to detail their plans. Speaking to the Associated Press, University of Alabama president Stewart Bell said that this program was actually in development for about a year and they have been working with Apple.

“We have actually been working on this project for some time a little bit under the cloak of secrecy. It is a next-generation technology program that will allow our students to have access to security issues and things they pay for.” The feature is expected to be launched this coming fall alongside iOS 12.

The University of Alabama won’t be alone in their efforts as it is also expected to be made available at Duke and the University of Oklahoma. It will also be eventually launched for Johns Hopkins University, Santa Clara University and Temple University.

Amazon To Sunset Live Video Support For Fire Tablets

If you have a hardware or software problem, sometimes you might have to ask questions in official support forums or talk to a company rep via social media like Facebook. However in the case of Amazon’s Fire Tablets, the company actually launched a service called Mayday that provided users with live video support.

Unfortunately it looks like that support will soon be coming to an end. This is according to a customer support page spotted by GeekWire where it reads, “The Mayday video calling service will be discontinued in June 2018.” For those unfamiliar, Mayday was launched back in 2013 and was unveiled by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos himself.

This does not mean that Amazon will be killing off support for the Fire Tablets, but rather if customers have an issue with their device, they will have to reach out by email, chat, or phone. What’s odd is that support staff will then have the opportunity to initiate Mayday. This is versus what’s available now where customers are the ones who can initiate the video call.

Mayday also allows the support staff to control the user’s tablet remotely which means that they’ll be able to navigate the tablet themselves and possibly figure out what’s wrong. It was a rather unique offering and we’re sure that there will be some sad to see it go.
