Sony’s Response To Fortnite Backlash Doesn’t Assuage Concerns

Fortnite was finally launched for the Nintendo Switch a few days back and given that it’s an insanely popular game that gained over 125 million players in less than a year, it goes without saying that a lot of people were happy that it had finally been released for the Switch. However, PlayStation 4 owners got a rude shock when they found out that Sony has effectively blocked Epic Games from enabling cross-play and progression sync between the PS4 and Switch, or the Xbox One for that matter. Sony has responded to the backlash but it won’t do much to assuage fans’ concerns.

The block means that players can carry over their progress, purchases, and skins from Fortnite on PlayStation 4 to the Nintendo Switch or Xbox One. They simply can’t use that Fortnite account on any other console. It’s pertinent to mention here that there’s no such limitation between the Xbox One and Switch.

This may not have surprised many Xbox One owners, though, given that Sony doesn’t allow Fortnite account sharing between the Xbox and PlayStation platforms as well.

”We’re always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience. Fortnite is already a huge hit with PS4 fans, offering a true free-to-play experience so gamers can jump in and play online. With 79 million PS4s sold around the world and more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we’ve built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles. We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms,” Sony said in its first response to the controversy.

It doesn’t address the concerns that fans have and doesn’t even hint if the company has any plans of enabling cross-play and progress sync between consoles.

Microsoft Working On Technology For Cashier-Free Stores Like Amazon Go

Amazon launched its first cashierless Amazon Go store earlier this year. It’s a grocery and convenience store that customers can shop at without ever having to wait in line at a cashier. They just go in, pick up the stuff they want and then walk out. Amazon has developed sophisticated technology backed by scanners and sensors to track what they put in the bag and walk out the store with and the bill is automatically charged to their Amazon account. A new report claims that Microsoft is working on similar technology which it would be able to provide to retailers willing to create their own cashier-free stores.

Reuters reports that Microsoft has been in discussions with Walmart about using its technology to power its cashier-free stores. The company has reportedly hired a computer vision specialist from Amazon Go and is believed to be experimenting with attaching cameras to shopping carts in order to track items. Some of its retailer partners are already building automated checkouts on top of its cloud services.

What the report doesn’t reveal is the kind of technology that Microsoft is going to use for its sensors but it may be released to its Project Kinect for Azure. It’s powered by Microsoft’s fourth-generation Kinect sensor that’s meant for use in conjunction with Azure AI services for spatial human object recognition.

While Amazon Go looks to add new stores in Chicago and San Francisco this year, it remains to be seen how soon Microsoft’s technology will be ready to hit the field.

WhatsApp Android Gingerbread Support Confirmed Until 2020

Many of you may have forgot about Android Gingerbread by now given that it came out many years ago and Android itself has significantly changed over that period. Nevertheless, given the fragmented nature of Android, there are still devices out there that are still powered by this iteration of the OS and WhatsApp, the world’s most popular cross-platform messaging service, wants to make sure that they can continue using the service so it has promised to keep supporting Gingerbread until 2020.

WhatsApp has a good track record of supporting operating systems that others have long ditched. For example, it kept supporting Nokia Symbian S60 until June 30th, 2017. BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, and Windows Phone 8.0 and older were supported until December 31st, 2017.

The Facebook-owned service has confirmed through its official blog that it will continue to support Android Gingerbread version 2.3.7 and older versions until February 1st, 2020. The first version of Gingerbread was released in 2010 so WhatsApp will essentially have supported this iteration of the OS for a decade.

Google’s latest Android numbers reveal that only 0.3 percent of devices out there are running Gingerbread but given that the platform powers over a billion devices, that’s still a considerable amount of users that WhatsApp wants to keep supporting for just a little bit longer.
