Interactive Minecraft: Story Mode To Launch On Netflix

There are many forms of entertainment, whether it be watching a movie or playing a game, but what if you could do both? According to a report from TechRadar, it seems that Netflix will be bringing Minecraft: Story Mode onto its platform this coming fall, which the company has clarified is not an indication that they will be launching games on its platform.

According to the report, it was originally suggested that Netflix could be getting into games with Minecraft. However according to Netflix who has since responded to the report, Minecraft; Story Mode will be a 5-episode interactive narrative series. Netflix launched interactive series back in 2017 and this will simply be part of that.

Netflix also said, “We don’t have any plans to get into gaming. There’s a broad spectrum of entertainment available today. Games have become increasingly cinematic, but we view this as interactive narrative storytelling on our service.” It is interesting to see how Minecraft has evolved from the game that it was when it first launched.

Minecraft can be found on mobile devices, PC, consoles, used for educational purposes, toys, and more. We’re not sure how well-received Minecraft: Story Mode will be when it launches, but given its popularity we wouldn’t be surprised if many kids will take to it.

Researchers Find That Cortana Can Be Used To Hack Windows 10 PCs

Cortana is Microsoft’s digital assistant that they have bundled with its Windows operating system. It is designed to help users accomplish various tasks, although it also seems to suffer from a bug that could allow hackers to actually use Cortana to hack the Windows 10 PC that it is installed on.

This discovery was made by the folks at McAfee where they discovered that activating Cortana on a locked Windows 10 PC, hackers could actually trick the digital assistant into launching a contextual menu that could be used to execute bits of code. This means that the hacker could get malicious software to run on the PC without having to unlock it, or they could even use it to reset a Windows account password which means that they could then gain access to the computer and its contents.

This problem is due to the fact that despite the computer being locked, Cortana is always on the listen for commands. Indexing also means that files are accessible in the search function that Cortana uses. The good news is that Microsoft has since dealt with the issue in the Patch Tuesday update, so if you want to avoid any nasty surprises, then perhaps you’ll want to update your computer ASAP.

NASA flies UAV in public airspace sans safety chaser for first time

For the first time, NASA has operated an unmanned aircraft without a safety chase plane in public airspace. This is a new milestone for the space agency, which says the flight involved its Ikhana remote-controlled UAV. Though the agency has operated unmanned aircraft in public airspace before, past missions always included a safety plane following it. The UAV is based … Continue reading

Facebook Now Requires Explicit Consent From Advertisers

Following their data privacy scandal and numerous revelations about how Facebook handles user data, the company is under intense scrutiny as they move forward. Facebook seems to be aware of that and has recently made some changes, one of which now requires advertisers gain explicit consent in order to do email or phone targeted based ads.

According to Facebook, “Starting July 2, we’re strengthening the requirements for when an advertiser shares Custom Audiences from a customer file— such as with its advertising agency. In these cases, both parties will need to establish an audience-sharing relationship through Business Manager, and agree to our Custom Audiences Terms.”

Note that this doesn’t apply to all ads and targeted ads that you see on Facebook, but are only applicable to Custom Audience advertising, but we suppose it is a start. In addition to gaining consent, advertisers will also need to disclose and declare where they might have gotten the contact info from.

Users will also be given more control and information, such as being able to click a link that lets them know who was responsible for the targeting information, how your contact info was involved, and if you’re not too pleased about it you can block those ads. Of course the onus lies with advertisers being truthful in their claims, and how Facebook plans to police this is unclear.

Mozilla Developing A Web Browser That Can Be Controlled By Voice

Mozilla is a company that many are probably familiar with as they are the developers behind the popular Firefox browser. However it seems that the company is looking to develop a new browser with an interesting key feature – it can be controlled using just the user’s voice. This was revealed at a meeting that took place in San Francisco.

Dubbed “Scout”, this is a new browser the company is currently developing. According to Mozilla, “With the Scout app, we start to explore browsing and consuming content with voice.” One of the sample commands that Mozilla showed off included, “Hey Scout, read me the article about polar bears.”

It is an interesting concept although we have to wonder about how popular it could get. The problem with voice recognition now is that it can be a bit slow to parse the commands, which means that it might actually be faster to type out your queries. Also there is the issue of being able to understand natural language, accents, and so on, all of which if not done right will end up being a frustrating experience.

However the upside is that it would definitely stand out amongst the competition. It would also make it more accessible to users who might have difficulty typing. No word on when we might see the release of this browser, but Mozilla states that it is an “early-stage project”, hinting that it could be a while.

Google Pixelbook Could Dual Boot Windows 10

Last year Google unveiled the Pixelbook which is basically a Chromebook that has the ability to fold back onto itself where users can choose to use it as a tablet or a regular laptop. Now there’s nothing inherently wrong with Chromebooks or Chrome OS in general, but admittedly platforms like Windows or macOS tend to be more “full” operating systems.

The good news is that maybe Google could be considering creating a Pixelbook that will dual boot both Chrome OS and Windows 10. According to a report from XDA, they have discovered that Google is attempting to get the Pixelbook certified by Microsoft under the Windows Hardware Certification Kit and Windows Hardware Lab Kit.

This means that the hardware has been signed off by Microsoft as being compatible for Windows along with working drivers. It doesn’t make sense for Google to seek the certification unless they are planning on using Windows with it, which suggests that they might be working on a Pixelbook that could dual boot both operating systems.

By doing so it would definitely create a more appealing device, where users who want simplicity can keep using Chrome OS, but if there are apps and tasks that require Windows, they have that option as well. No word on when we might see such as Pixelbook, but perhaps we could learn more later this year when the new Pixel phones are announced.
