Facebook Winding Down Data-Sharing Partnership With Huawei

The New York Times recently reported on a data-sharing partnership between Facebook and Huawei. The report mentioned that the agreement between the companies dates back to 2010 and provided Huawei with special access to the data of Facebook users. The partnership was part of Facebook’s efforts to enable smartphone manufacturers to build Facebook-like experiences and make the social network’s services more convenient for users. Facebook has now said that it will wind down its data-sharing partnership with Huawei.

The arrangement has been referred to as “standard industry practice” by a Facebook representative. Huawei isn’t the only Chinese company that Facebook reportedly had such an arrangement with, Lenovo, Oppo, and TCL are on the list as well.

It’s the company’s partnership with Huawei that’s causing it to take a lot of flak. Huawei has often been cited as a security concern by government agencies such as the FBI and the NSA. Huawei has time and again denied allegations that its devices enable the Chinese government to spy on its users but the argument has never swayed U.S. agencies.

“Facebook’s integrations with Huawei, Lenovo, OPPO and TCL were controlled from the get go — and we approved the Facebook experiences these companies built,” said Francisco Varela, vice president of Facebook mobile partnerships, said in a statement, adding that the company wants to clarify that the data from these integrations with Huawei were stored on the device and not on Huawei’s servers.

“Huawei has never collected or stored any Facebook user data,” the Chinese company said in its own statement. Despite having similar arrangements with other manufacturers, Facebook has now said that it’s going to wind down its partnership with Huawei by the end of this week.

Tesla To Bring Back Free Autopilot Trials

Tesla has been delivering cars with Autopilot hardware installed regardless of whether the customer has bought the convenience feature package which enables its semi-autonomous driving feature. Tesla started offering free Autopilot trials to those customers starting in 2016 so that they could try out the feature free for one month before deciding whether or not they wanted to pay for the upgrade. It stopped the trials some time back but it appears that Tesla is now thinking about offering Autopilot trials once again.

The free Autopilot trial would enable automatic steering, speed, lane changing, and parking with Summon so that customers could get the full Autopilot experience. Once they signed up for the trial, they would also receive an email from Tesla with instructions on how to permanently get the Autopilot upgrade should they so desire.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk mentioned during the company’s recent shareholders’ meeting that Tesla is going to push out a new Autopilot update in the near future which is going to bring “significant improvements” to the semi-autonomous driving feature.

Once the update is rolled out, Tesla may start offering Autopilot trials again to get Tesla owners who have still not bought the Autopilot upgrade to give the system another shot. Musk said that the free trial may be offered “within the next couple months,” but didn’t say if it’s going to be a month-long trial like before.

Parrot ANAFI Folding Drone Records 4K Stabilized Video

Parrot has introduced a new drone that looks set to take on the DJI Mavic Air, and it looks pretty sweet. The Parrot ANAFI drone is made specifically to take high-quality photos and video from the air, while being portable enough to tote in a backpack.

The ANAFI is a foldable drone designed specifically to make it easy to take with you and store.  It has an attached 4K HDR camera that can tilt on a 180-degree gimbal and has 2.8x lossless zoom. The camera also has three-axis image stabilization to eliminate any shake caused by wind or weather. Parrot designed the drone for quiet operation and to be resistant to weather conditions. An internal battery makes the drone good for flights of 25 minutes per charge.

AI is embedded to allow the drone to fly in autonomous modes to capture pro-quality shots, like automatically framing or following a subject. The camera uses a 1/2.4″ 21 megapixel CMOS Sony sensor with a wide-angle f/2.4 ASPH lens, and the still images it shoots can be output in Adobe DNG/RAW format for optimal quality. The ANAFI is priced at just $699.99, with additional batteries going for $99. It’s available for pre-order today from the Parrot website, with shipping starting on July 2, 2018.
