Apple Reportedly Planning Streaming Bundle For TV, Music, News

With Apple picking up as many new shows and movies as they are, the question is how will Apple distribute them? Will it be part of an Apple Music subscription? Will it be part of Apple TV? According to a report from The Information (paywall; via MacRumors), it seems that Apple could be planning a massive subscription bundle.

The report claims that Apple will apparently be creating a single subscription bundle that will put together TV shows, Apple Music, and also digital magazines. This is in line with a recent report from Recode who claims that Apple is thinking of creating its own subscription service for its shows, and that it might be cheaper than Netflix.

We’re not sure if cheaper is possible now that Apple could be planning on bundling various services together, but perhaps there could be a standalone plan for those who just want access to shows and not music or magazines. Apple’s interest in digital magazines and the news is not a secret and earlier this year, the company acquired Texture, a platform which was described as the Netflix for magazines.

It was unclear as to what Apple planned to do with their acquisition, but if The Information’s report checks out, it’s starting to make more sense now.

Google Calendar Automatically Rejects Invites When You’re Away

If you’re the sort of person who gets incredibly busy and is bombarded by meetings and event invites left and right, it’s always nice to take a break. However just because you are on a break doesn’t mean that the rest of the world is, which means that emails, messages, meetings, will still go on.

The good news is that if you use Google Calendar to manage your meetings, you’ll be pleased to learn that an update to the service will now let you enjoy your break in peace. This is done by Google essentially automatically rejecting any meeting or event invites that happen to fall within your break.

According to Google, “Google Calendar will automatically decline meetings that occur during this time period. You can customize both the decline message as well as the visibility of the title of your out of office object. Going forward, Google Calendar will try to intelligently detect, based on the title entered, when you’re creating an out of office object and change the type automatically. You can always manually change this if you’d like to opt for a different entry type.”

Google claims that this is done to improve your digital well-being, something that we’re seeing more companies do these days.

NVIDIA SHIELD TV Android Oreo rollout isn’t going smoothly

Despite, or probably because of, not having Android smartphones, NVIDIA has had an amazing track record when it comes to pushing out updates, both maintenance as well as major features. Disney’s Acquisition Of Fox Approved By US DoJ With Some Caveats

For a moment it felt like Disney’s attempt to acquire Fox could be in jeopardy when Comcast threw in a bid of their own. However it seems that Disney really wants Fox when they countered with a substantially higher bid, and while all of this sounds good, there is the question of whether or not it will be approved by the US Department of Justice.

After all given the size of Disney and Fox, a merger could result in monopolistic behavior. However for those who have been watching the deal, the good news is that it looks like the US DoJ has approved it. However there will be a catch to this approval, and that is that Disney will need to divest itself of Fox’s various regional sports networks.

According to anti-trust chief Makan Delrahim, “American consumers have benefitted from head-to-head competition between Disney and Fox’s cable sports programming that ultimately has prevented cable television subscription prices from rising even higher. Today’s settlement will ensure that sports programming competition is preserved in the local markets where Disney and Fox compete for cable and satellite distribution.”

Note that this doesn’t necessarily mean that this is a done deal as a federal judge will still need to approve it. However given that we’ve seen many deals fall apart due to anti-trust concerns, the fact that Disney has managed to clear this hurdle is definitely a good sign.

Apple Patents iPhone-To-iPhone Transfers By Bumping Handsets Together

If you’re looking to transfer files from iPhone to another iPhone, there are various ways around that. For example you could send it over iMessage, share a Dropbox link, send it using WhatsApp, use Google Drive, or even use Apple’s proprietary transfer feature in the form of AirDrop.

However it seems that Apple could be thinking of creating another way of sharing files between iPhones, and that is through bumping devices together. This is according to a recently discovered patent which suggests that this could be a way of sharing files between iPhones, or possibly even use it to facilitate Apple Pay P2P payments.

If you’re wondering why this sounds so familiar, it is because in the early days of the iPhone and way before AirDrop was even introduced, there was an app called Bump. As the name suggests, the idea was that iPhone users could share data with each other by bumping their iPhones against each other.

However the app was later discontinued after Google acquired them. We’re not sure why Apple could still be thinking about using this method for data transfer, but then again it is a patent which means that there’s no guarantee that it will actually be made a reality.

Health and technology go hand in hand, why explains why wearables like smartwatches and fitness trackers are booming because everyone wants to know how they are doing. It is also why companies like Apple have been spending a lot of resources on developing healthcare tools and features.

Microsoft definitely does not want to be left out of the loop and has recently assembled a new team that will focus on their healthcare efforts. Dubbed Microsoft Healthcare, this new team will focus on partnerships and cross-company strategies for both healthcare and life sciences. Microsoft has also hired Joshua Mandel who will be the Chief Architect of Microsoft Healthcare.

According to Microsoft, “In his most recent role, Josh led the health IT ecosystem work at Verily (Google Life Sciences). He is a member of the research faculty at the Boston Children’s Hospital Computational Health Informatics Program where he served as lead architect for SMART Health IT, and is a visiting scientist at the Harvard Medical School Department of Biomedical Informatics.”

They have also hired Jim Weinstein who will be the VP of Microsoft Healthcare where he had previously served as both CEO and President of Dartmouth-Hitchcock and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health system. We’re not sure what will be the result of this new team, but if anything, it does show how important Microsoft believes in healthcare technology.
