Third Lawsuit Filed Against Apple Over The MacBook Pro’s Keyboard

By now we suppose it’s pretty obvious that there are many MacBook Pro users who aren’t particularly thrilled with the keyboard design on the laptops. So much so that not one, but two lawsuits have since been filed against the company over the design. Unfortunately for Apple that’s not quite the end of their problems yet.

According to Patently Apple (via Cult of Mac), a third lawsuit has since been filed against the Cupertino company. The lawsuit is asking for, “monetary, declaratory and equitable relief for Apple’s: 1) breach of its express and implied warranties; 2) breach of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act; 3) breach of the duty of good faith and fair dealing; 4) breach of California’s Unfair Competition Law; 5) breach of California’s Consumers Legal Remedies Act; and 6) fraudulent concealment.”

One of the reasons behind these lawsuits is due to the design, which Apple changed a couple of years ago when they introduced the 12-inch Retina MacBook. However many users have found that the new keyboards are prone to more problems compared to the older design, something that an earlier report from AppleInsider also found to be true.

The problem is also in its repair because not only would the entire keyboard need to be swapped out, but the fact that it is glued to other MacBook Pro components means that those need to be removed as well, which according to the latest lawsuit could cost customers as much as $700.

Facebook Reportedly Shared Data With Apple, Microsoft, Samsung

While Facebook has yet to recover from its recent data privacy scandal with Cambridge Analytica, it seems that a new report has shed more light onto Facebook’s data-sharing practices which will no doubt raise more eyebrows. In a report from The New York Times, it has been revealed that Facebook has several data-sharing partnerships with several huge tech companies.

The report claims that Facebook has reached data-sharing agreements with at least 60 device makers, including the likes of Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, and BlackBerry over the past decade or so. The deals would allow Facebook to expand its reach by integrating some of its features into the devices of these companies, such as “like” buttons, address books, and messaging.

In return, Facebook would allow these companies to access the data of users and their friends without their explicit consent. The report also found that even if the user’s friends had barred any form of sharing, some device makers could still retrieve personal information. The report goes on to claim that many of the partnerships formed are still in effect, although following the fallout from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook reportedly started winding them down in April.

Facebook has since responded to the article by The New York Times in a post on its website penned by Ime Archibong, VP of Product Partnerships. According to Archibong, the post claims that these partnerships were formed out of necessity in the early days of smartphones where Facebook tried to get their services to as many users as possible.

Sony Xperia Z5 Tablet May No Longer Be Happening

These days it’s rare to see Android tablets being made. This is because for the most part, Apple’s iPad continues to dominate which makes it hard for Android makers to really put out a tablet that can compete with it. This is why over the years we’ve started to see the number of tablets from mainstream companies dwindle.

Now there have been rumors that Sony could be thinking of making a comeback with the Xperia Z5 Tablet, the successor to the Xperia Z4 Tablet from a few years ago. Unfortunately that may no longer be happening, according to a report from Android Marvel who claims that a source has told them that Sony might have cancelled development on it.

According to their report, Sony had actually planned to launch the tablet this year, but apparently they decided against it as sales for their flagship phones were less than stellar. Presumably Sony’s confidence in their tablet sales might not be particularly high based on this information.

It is unclear as what kind of specs or features that Xperia Z5 Tablet might be packing, so it’s hard to say what we might have missed out on. No word on whether Sony plans on revisiting their tablet efforts at a later date, but for now perhaps you should look elsewhere if you’re after a new tablet.

Tablets are dead, long live Chrome tablets!

Google experience a glitch in the matrix over the weekend where the last traces of Android’s tablet existence vanished without a trace. Evidence that there were, once upon a time, such things as Android tablets has since then returned but their sudden and silent removal served to confirm what many have been expecting to happen sooner rather than later. This DIY smart mirror is small, stunning and full of features

Several years ago Google X engineer Max Braun published a medium post on a smart mirror he made and now he’s back with a new version that’s smaller and smarter. This is a smart mirror I can get behind though I still find smart mirrors completely frivolous.

He published his project on Medium where he explains the process and the parts a person would need to build their own. This isn’t a project for everyone, but Max gives enough instructions that most enterprising builders should be able to hack something similar together.

I recently reviewed a smart mirror and found it a bit silly but still useful. Ideally, like in Max’s smart mirrors, the software is passive and always available. Users shouldn’t have to think about interacting with the devices; the right information should be displayed automatically. It’s a balancing act.

At this point, smart mirrors are little more than Android tablets placed behind a two-way mirror. Retail models are expensive to be buy and hardly worth it since a person’s phone or voice assistant can probably provide the same information. After all, how many devices does a person really need to tell them the weather forecast?
