Uganda Imposes Social Media Tax To ‘Stop Gossip’

Social media can be used for good or bad. For example we’ve seen instances of how social media can help return a lost pet to its owner, but it can also be used for the bad where we’ve seen how social media can be used to bully others online, creating a mob-like mentality. This is why Uganda thinks imposing a social media tax could be one way to manage it.

The country’s parliament has recently passed a somewhat controversial law that will impose a daily levy of 200 shilling (around $0.05) on its citizens who use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Viber, and so on. According to President Yoweri Museveni, he argued that social media apparently encourages gossip, so by imposing a tax, it is hoped that users will be more responsible with their social media use.

It is an interesting approach and it does seem like a radical solution to the problem, although many have since questioned how such a tax will be implemented. Will it be enabled for all customers of ISPs and carriers by default? Or is it on a per-use case, where upon detection that the person has accessed social media, they will then be billed for the entire day? Either way we’ll have to wait and see how this pans out.

Apple Cutting Orders From Dialog Possibly In Favor Of Their Own Chips

Apple is a company that loves to do everything themselves if possible. The advantages to this are pretty obvious since it could mean lower costs in the long run, removes the uncertainty of whether or not the relationship between Apple and the other company turning sour, and also greater control over specifications and features.

This is why when we heard the rumors last year that Apple could be looking to develop their own power management chips for the iPhone, it didn’t really seem like a stretch of the imagination. Now it looks like Apple’s progress on their own power management chips are well underway, or at least that’s what’s being speculated according to a report from The Financial Times (via 9to5Mac).

The report includes a statement from Dialog (the company that Apple sources from) in which the company’s CEO confirmed that Apple has reduced the number of orders from their company by as much as 30%. The company’s CEO also goes on to add that he expects there to be further reductions in 2019.

While it is possible that Apple could have found another supplier, this does fuel the rumors that Apple could be making their own power management chips and are now phasing out Dialog’s chips slowly. Earlier this year Dialog stated that they will still be doing business with Apple, although this recent report reveals that it might not be at the same volume as before.

Walmart’s Latest Service Lets You Text To Order

If there is a reason why more people are shopping online than in retail, it is because it is more convenient. This allows shoppers to do their shopping wherever they are, as opposed to having to make a special trip to the store, saving them a ton of time in the process. This is why it’s not surprising to see traditional retailers such as Walmart come up with ways to bring customers back.

The latest initiative comes in the form of a service called Jetblack. This is a service that is only available in New York at the moment, but basically what it does is that it lets users order items from Walmart simply by sending a text message. It won’t just include items from Walmart, but will also cover items from Jet.com, Saks, and Pottery Barn.

It will cost customers $50 a month which will include other services such as gift recommendations, gift wrapping, fast deliveries, and easy returns. One of the perks is being able to ask for recommendations from personal shoppers, which means that if you’re looking for a gift idea for a particular occasion, you’ll be able to text for it.

However at $50 a month, it is considerably more expensive compared to Amazon Prime, but as CNBC points out, this service is aimed more towards Walmart’s affluent shoppers. According to Marc Lore, Walmart’s head of e-commerce, “Our eCommerce strategy has been focused on three elements: nailing the fundamentals, leveraging our unique strengths to play offense and innovating for the future. Powered by conversational commerce, the future of retail will bring convenience and high-touch personalization to the forefront for consumers everywhere.”
