Casio Chairman and CEO Kazuo Kashio passed on June 19, 2018 at the age of 89. The cause of death was pneumonia.
Kashio was the third eldest of the four brothers who founded Casio Computer in 1957. Their first product, the all-electric 14-A calculator, led to the release of the Casio Mini calculator in 1972, a product that brought electronic calculators into the mainstream.
Casio’s biggest claim to fame was Kashio’s own idea. The CEO looked at quartz watches in the 1980s and saw that they were delicate and easy to break. With a little extra outer cladding and some internal shock resistance systems, however, he was able to create a watch that could truly stand up to heavy wear. The first G-Shock, released in 1983, paved the way for truly rugged watches and the company recently celebrated the 100 millionth G-Shock sold last August.
The company, Kashio Manufacturing, began in 1947 with a unique product: a cigarette clip that let users smoke the last bit of each butt. In the 1970s, the Kashio family saw the move to electronic counting machines and brought some of the first portable and pocket calculators to market alongside the ultra popular F-91W LCD watch and the Cassiopeia PDA. The company also created the first LCD digital camera, the QV-10 and the popular Casiotone keyboards.
He is survived by his son, Kazuhiro Kashio, who is the current Casio president.
Apparently the Galaxy Note 9 is coming with a new S Pen, one that’s advanced beyond the past several generations of the smartphone. It’s not 100% clear what’ll be going on here, but we’ve had a couple chats with insiders (who shall remain anonymous) who’ve given us a couple clues as to the nature of this upgrade. We’re fairly confident … Continue reading

Last month, Google detailed something of a makeover for Google Maps. Personalization seems to be the name of the game here, with Google attempting to make it easier to find places to eat or drink and things to do by revamping the Explore tab. Most of these changes are going live in Android and iOS today, giving frequent Google Maps … Continue reading
Google has updated its Google Home smart speaker with a new major ability: Spanish. With this, Assistant via the Google Home device can understand voice requests made in Spanish, rather than just English, greatly expanding the device’s appeal for many families. The speaker doesn’t jump straight to Spanish when it hears a command in that language, though. Here’s how to … Continue reading
HMD Global, the company that makes Nokia-branded smartphones, continues to release improvements for its devices months after they hit the market. It recently launched the Pro Camera mode for the Nokia 8 after promising a few months back that it would release camera improvements for the device. The company has now confirmed that it will soon release the face unlock feature for four of its smartphones.
Face unlock will enable users of the Nokia 6.1, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 8, and the Nokia 8 Sirocco to unlock their handsets with facial recognition. It merits mentioning here, though, that this feature won’t be as secure as Apple’s Face ID for example, given that these handsets don’t have any 3D sensors or advanced equipment.
The face unlock feature on these devices will simply rely on the front camera and as we have already seen, it’s possible to easily fool the system. 2D face unlock functionality is more for convenience than it is for security.
That being said, HMD Global has now confirmed that it’s going to release the face unlock feature for the Nokia 6.1, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 8, and Nokia 8 Sirocco via an over-the-air update in the coming months. It hasn’t provided a confirmed release date at this point in time, though.

The lack of USB Type-C ports on the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop wasn’t much appreciated by customers and Microsoft promised that it would release a Surface USB-C dongle to address the matter. It confirmed a couple of months back that it still hasn’t forgotten about the dongle and that it would be released later this year. Microsoft has now finally confirmed the price and release date for the much-awaited Surface Type-C dongle.
A spokesperson for Microsoft confirmed to The Verge that the Surface USB Type-C dongle will be available to business customers later this week. The dongle is going to be priced at $79.99 for commercial users and it will be available to them through conventional business purchasing channels from June 29th.
The company’s dongle will connect into the Surface Connector charging port and allow users to connect their USB Type-C devices or charge using a USB Type-C charger. Microsoft has also released an image of the dongle.
However, the company hasn’t confirmed at this point in time when the USB Type-C dongle is going to be available for end consumers and when it will be available for purchase through retail stores. It’s likely that anyone will soon be able to purchase it, though, as Microsoft had also limited the Surface Pro LTE to commercial channels but it was easily available for purchase from its online store.
