Google added some new features to Google Maps last month in order to make it easier for users to explore their city. The idea behind these features was to make Maps more assistive in personal to better help users figure out what they want to eat, drink, and do no matter where they are in the world. These features were initially released to a small number of users but Google has now confirmed that they’re available to all users.
The Explore tab in Maps has been redesigned to provide quick recommendations for restaurants, bars, and cafes in any area that the user is interested in. They can get recommendations in their city or anywhere they’re planning a trip. Maps will also feature trending lists from local experts and Google’s algorithms to track the top spots.
Maps will then keep track of users’ progress against any of the restaurants featured in the trending lists. If they want to try the 10 best burgers in their city and have only been to four, Maps will note that down so that they remember to get to the remaining six as well.
Users who have Location History turned on will see a “Your match” rating for each restaurant or bar. It’s a numeric rating which will tell him how likely they are to enjoy a place based on their preferences. Maps can take food and drink preferences into account to surface personalized dining recommendations, this can be done by selecting the types of cuisines and restaurants from the app’s Settings menu. Last but not the least, the new “For you” tab will keep users informed about hot new restaurants and spots.
These features are now live in Google Maps for iOS and Android for users across the globe.

The transportation authority of Britain’s capital, Transport for London, declined to renew Uber’s license to operate in the city last September. It said that the company’s “approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications,” which is why it wasn’t renewing the license. Uber continued to operate in the city after appealing the decision and it has had its day in court. The court has ruled that Uber can continue to operate in London.
A Westminster Magistrates’ Court announced today that Uber has been given a probationary license which will mandate a review every 15 months. The license will allow the company to continue operating its service in the city.
Uber did make multiple changes to its service after its licensed was revoked by Transport for London. The company has also promised that it will report “serious incidents” that happen during rides to the police. Uber has also established 24-hour telephone support hotlines and even added a panic button to its app which allows riders to immediately call the police.
Uber had much to gain from winning in court. London is the company’s biggest market in Europe with more than 3.5 million users. TfL’s lawyers have said that the issues its decision was based on have “either been addressed by changes introduced” or that “they relate to an historic course of conduct that has now been abandoned.”

A handful of new Instagram features were announced at Facebook’s F8 developers’ conference and Instagram video chat was one of them. The company is now rolling out those features for the photo-sharing app. Instagram video chat has gone live today alongside the Explore tab redesign and third-party AR filters.
When it announced video chat, Instagram revealed that more than 100 million users watch or share on Live every single day. It also acknowledged that its users have asked to experience real-time video in a smaller group.
That’s why it’s bringing video chat functionality to Instagram. Friends will be able to start a video chat by tapping on the new camera icon at the top of a Direct thread. They can chat one-on-one or with a small group and can keep the conversation going for as long as they like as there are no time limits.
Instagram has also unlocked the ability to third parties to design unique AR camera filters to provide more variety to users. Custom filters from BuzzFeed, Ariana Grande, and the NBA will be available at launch with more to arrive from others soon.
The redesigned Explore tab is going to make it easier for users to discover new ideas and people on Instagram. The recommendations will still be personalized but the content will be sorted into topic channels so users can browse their interests and dive deeper into the ones they like the most.
All of these features are rolling out today on Instagram for Android and iOS.
