Looking Glass promises a holographic display with no headsets

Virtual and augmented reality have created the need for a niche type of content creation, one that requires truly immersive 3D experiences. But while there are already tools for that, a bottleneck is created when you have to put on cumbersome VR or AR headsets just to quickly test their work. Wouldn’t it be great if you could actually see … Continue reading

Alexa Cast will let users cast Amazon Music to Alexa devices

Amazon today announced Alexa Cast to allow for better music control on Alexa devices. Users will be able to more easily transition from listening to through the Amazon Music app to listening to Amazon Music on an Alexa device. This is a much-needed function for Amazon’s core services.

Before Alexa Cast, it can be messy switching between listening to Amazon Music on different devices. The service does not have the same sort of controls found on other services like Spotify . It sounds like Amazon is finally building out features that will turn Amazon Music into a legit music service and Alexa Cast is a good step forward.

The service is available starting today. Users need to update their iOS and Android app to access the feature. Just like with Spotify Connect or Apple AirPlay users will need to tap on the Alexa Cast icon and select the device they want to playback the streaming music.

It’s unclear from the initial announcement if Amazon will bring this functionality to other apps or let developers use it.

BlackBerry KEY2 Found To Be More Durable Than Its Predecessor

Last year when BlackBerry launched the KEYone, there were some issues with regards to its durability where based on tests, it was discovered that the screen could be easily unhinged when pressure was put on the phone to bend it. Subsequent models had this issue address, to the credit of its manufacturer TCL.

So the question is based on the findings of the durability of the KEYone, how does the recently launched KEY2 fare? Thanks to the folks at JerryRigEverything, we have an idea and if you don’t have the time to watch the entire video (it runs for almost 7 minutes), basically the tests the phone was put through proved that it is more sturdy than its predecessor.

Some of the changes that TCL made was using a flat glass that does not pool over the edges. While the curved edges do look more sleek, they do make it more prone to cracking, which the flat glass does away with. The chassis used is a 7000-series aluminum, and the material on the back is made from rubber which makes the device better and easier to hold.

It also seems to be better at withstanding the bend test without its display popping out, so kudos to TCL for remembering that key issue and addressing it in the KEY2. Of course there is more to a phone than just its durability but if you’re in it for the long haul, know that the KEY2 should be more than capable of withstanding a few knocks and bumps and then some.

Google Assistant Can Now Read You Sections Of The News

News can be consumed in a variety of format, such as reading it or watching it or listening to it. Now we’re sure that many of us have envisioned a future where we can get our digital assistants to read the news to us, and now it looks like Google is hoping to make that future come true.

The company has announced a new collaboration with schema.org to develop a data specification called “speakable”. Basically what this does is that publishers can now highlight portions of their news articles that would be the most relevant, which in turn would be read aloud by Google Assistant.

According to Google, “When people ask the Google Assistant — ‘Hey Google, what’s the latest news on NASA?’, the Google Assistant responds with an excerpt from a news article and the name of the news organization.” This means that these sections would most likely contain the meat of the story and the key points, so for those who’d rather not bother with the introductions and conclusions and just want the main facts, this speakable feature will help with that.

That being said, the onus now falls onto news publishers to take advantage of implementing speakable into their articles. This means that until more publishers do that, this feature won’t be able to hit its full potential.

Spotify Is Now Boasting 83 Million Paid Subscribers

Back in May, Spotify announced that they had managed to hit 75 million paid subscribers worldwide. This was huge as it meant that Spotify managed to retain their lead as the biggest platform for music streaming. Fast forward a couple of months later, it looks like they are still maintaining their lead.

Spotify’s latest financials have revealed that the company now plays home to 83 million paid subscribers. This means from then until now, Spotify grew by a very impressive 8 million new paid subscribers. According to Spotify, they claim that their Family Plan is one of the main reasons behind its growth.

For those unfamiliar, platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music offer family plans which allows multiple users to be grouped under one subscription. This is generally cheaper than individual subscriptions so it’s easy to see how many users are taking Spotify up on their offer. That being said, note that the 83 million is for worldwide subscribers.

Some might recall that earlier this month it was reported that Apple Music had actually managed to overtake Spotify in the US market, although it is unclear as to whether or not this new 8 million subscribers might have helped Spotify regain their spot in the US.
