Verizon May Team Up With Apple Or Google For 5G TV Service

Verizon is looking to launch its fixed 5G broadband service later this year and it appears that the company wants to team up with other companies for its live TV over 5G service. A report claims that Verizon is mulling a possible partnership with either Google or Apple for this matter.

Bloomberg hears that Verizon wants to partner with either Apple or Google to launch a streaming TV service when its fixed 5G broadband is launched later this year. The talks with both companies are said to be in early stages and there’s always the possibility that they end up falling through.

The scribe mentions that Verizon is looking to either have YouTube TV provide live programming or Apple TV. Don’t be confused by the name, it doesn’t refer to Apple’s own set-top box. The bit about the talks with Apple over this service is confusing given that Apple isn’t expected to launch its online TV streaming service until March next year.

What’s also unconfirmed at this point in time is how much the service might cost. It won’t exactly be cheap, considering the fact that YouTube TV already costs $40 per month. Apple, YouTube, and Verizon have not yet commented on this report.

Nintendo Starts Suing ROM Sites

Nintendo isn’t a fan of third-party ROM releases. It has been quick to take action against fan-made edits or its original games’ files but that action was previously limited to DMCA notices and cease and desist orders. The company now appears to have adopted a more aggressive strategy as it’s now suing ROM sites.

TorrentFreak reports that Nintendo of America has filed a lawsuit against LoveROMs and LoveRetro. It’s seeking millions in damages from the websites as they serve its classic games’ files. The company calls it the “brazen and mass-scale infringement of Nintendo’s intellectual property rights.”

Websites like LoveROMs and LoveRetro are one-stop solutions for Nintendo fans as they host in-browser emulators and ROM downloads. The lawsuit filing includes interface explanations and screenshots to show how the users of these websites can gain access to thousands of Nintendo games and associated copyrighted works and images.

The company seeks “$150,000 for the infringement of each Nintendo copyrighted work and up to $2,000,000 for the infringement of each Nintendo trademark.” It also wants the full disclosure of the “receipts and disbursements, profit and loss statements, advertising revenue, donations and cryptocurrency revenue, and other financial materials,” of the operators of these websites.

Once the lawsuit was filed, LoveROMs updated its website to remove all Nintendo-related links, it has also taken down ROMs and emulators. LoveRetro now directs users to a single page which reads that “Loveretro has effectively been shut down until further notice.”

eBay To Start Accepting Apple Pay

As eBay transitions to a non-PayPal payment system, it’s opening itself up to other payment systems as well. eBay has confirmed that it will soon start accepting Apple Pay. Apple’s own mobile payments service is used by countless people who own its products. Apple Pay will be one of the first payment options of its kind for eBay and it will enable customers to pay for goods through the eBay website on Safari or its mobile app.

eBay and PayPal split in 2015 and the former had then revealed that it would move to an integrated payment system developed by Adyen. It’s a back-end service which means that eBay will be able to offer different checkout options. Apple Pay will certainly be one of many checkout options that eBay will eventually add to the payment system.

Apple Pay will initially be available as a payment option to a small group of Marketplace customers who will get the chance to participate in the first phase of the payment service’s rollout on eBay. All users will not get it initially but eBay will expand it over time so that all of its users can pay with Apple Pay.

“Offering Apple Pay as a form of payment on eBay is the first step in providing more choice and flexibility in payment options to our tens of millions of buyers,” said Steve Fisher, the SVP of Payments at eBay.

Apple Pay will be available to select Marketplace customers starting this fall.
