YouTube Testing New ‘Explore’ Tab On The iOS App

One of the features of Instagram is the Explore section on the app where users can find posts that are either popular or that Instagram thinks they might like based on accounts they follow. This is a good way of discovering new posts. Now it looks like YouTube could be taking a page out of Instagram’s book.

Announced on the Google Product Forums, YouTube has revealed that they will be testing out a new Explore tab on its iOS app. However YouTube notes that this will be a very small test group so don’t be surprised if you’re not part of it. YouTube also makes it clear that this will not be replacing the Trending tab and that the Explore tab will exist alongside of it.

According to YouTube, “With more videos coming to YouTube every minute we’re always experimenting with ways to make it easier for people to find, watch and share the videos that matter most to them. One thing we’ll be testing on iOS over the new few weeks is a new ‘Explore’ tab, which will help you discover more videos, topics and channels that you might not otherwise see. We also hope Explore will be a space where creators of all sizes, including emerging creators, can have their content discovered.”

At the moment YouTube on the desktop already offers up Recommended videos on the front page, so we imagine that this Explore tab should have similar functionality. It is unclear if YouTube plans on making this a mainstay so we guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

ESports Could Soon Be Part Of The Olympics

Are eSports considered to be sports in the traditional sense of the word? That’s still somewhat up for debate as there are many traditionalists who beg to differ, but at the same time there are many, including universities, who consider eSports to be something that could be worth giving scholarships over.

However could eSports ever grow to the point where it might make it into the Olympics? Some industry veterans think it should, and just last year the Olympic Committee actually acknowledged it as a sporting activity. Now it looks like we could be one step closer to see eSports in the Olympics as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Global Association of International Sports Federations have recently met to discuss that possibility.

Both the IOC and GAISF have brought together 150 representatives from the eSports and gaming scene to meet at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, where one of the topics discussed was whether or not eSports should be included in the Olympics. That being said for those who follow eSports, maybe you shouldn’t hold your breath just yet.

There is still a lot of discussion to be had regarding its inclusion, and the earliest eSports could debut in the Olympics would be in 2024 in Paris, so like we said, there is still quite a bit of waiting to do but it’s encouraging to see that steps are being taken to at the very least consider its inclusion.

Nikon Teases Upcoming Mirrorless Camera

Photographers have probably heard that Nikon is working on new mirrorless cameras, and for those who are interested in seeing what the company has to offer, it appears that the company has posted a teaser video on YouTube in which many speculate could be about its upcoming mirrorless offerings.

Dubbed “Travel of Light”, the description of the video reads, “Countless rays of light come together, forming an image at the end of their long journey. Nikon’s ongoing mission heading into the future: to guide light into forming superb pictures.” The video does not specifically mention mirrorless cameras, but the silhouette at the end of the video certainly leaves little to the imagination.

What’s interesting is that towards the end of the video, the mount of the camera has been highlighted by a glowing ring, which if we had to read into it could be Nikon teasing a new mount. We have heard the rumors that Nikon could introduce a new Z-mount for its new mirrorless cameras, and maybe that’s what this teaser is about.

In any case we expect that Nikon should have an announcement soon because it has been datamined from Nikon’s own website that an announcement could take place on the 23rd of August.

Apple iPhone repair videos leaked, specialized tools revealed

It’s really no secret by now that Apple has some of the most restrictive repair policies in the consumer electronics market. It even sometimes runs afoul of government regulations regarding warranties and third-party repairs. It has some pretty secretive procedures and proprietary tools for the job, which has left many in the third-party repair service industry coming up with their … Continue reading

Acer Chromebook Tab 10 now available for regular consumers

It’s almost puzzling that Google was so proud of the first ever Chrome OS tablet and yet restricted its availability to the education market. Granted, it was really aimed for students and schools anyway, preempting Apple’s launch of the more affordable but Pencil-compatible new iPad. If you have actually been wishing you could get your hands on the Acer Chromebook … Continue reading
