Downloading ROMs of classic games is something a lot of gamers do, much to the distress and frustration of the companies who own the rights to those games. Nintendo in particular has historically taken a hard line against ROM downloads and the sites that make them possible, and it shows no sign of letting up. The company has filed a … Continue reading

Samsung unveiled its massive 146 inch 4K MicroLED TV called The Wall at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 earlier this year. It demonstrated the company’s new technology that promises improved image quality compared to OLED TVs. Samsung has now said that it’s going to release a consumer version of The Wall TV next year.
The consumer version of this TV is going to be much thinner. The Wall measures 80mm whereas the consumer version will come in at 30mm thick. It’s obviously meant for those who like to buy luxury TVs but the price may not be outrageous. Samsung Display president Han Jong-hee has said that “the price will not be as high as people think.”
The company positions its MicroLED technology as the successor to OLED. Even though its OLED displays for smartphones are legendary, Samsung decided against opting for this technology for TVs. It went in another direction with its quantum LED or QLED technology for TVs.
MicroLED TVs are similar to their OLED counterparts in that they don’t require a backlight since the pixels can emit their own. The contrast ratios are high and the power consumption is lower than conventional LEDs.
Samsung hasn’t confirmed as yet precisely when the consumer version of The Wall TV is going to be available for purchase and how much it’s going to cost.

Arlo Smart Doorbell Launched
Posted in: Today's Chili
Arlo, owned by Netgear, today announced the launch of a new smart doorbell which is fully compatible with its security cameras and security lights. The wire-free Arlo Audio Doorbell is meant as a replacement for the conventional doorbell. It provides a host of smart features to make users’ lives easier.
Every time someone rings the Arlo Audio Doorbell, the app will call the user’s smartphone so that they can speak to their visitors. Users can also configure the app to send a pre-recorded greeting when the doorbell is rung.
The product can easily be integrated with the existing conventional doorbell’s wiring but it can be used as a wireless doorbell as well. It only requires two AA batteries. Netgear says that it observed during testing that the batteries in the doorbell can last for almost a year.
For those who don’t want to be constantly called by their doorbell the company offers the Arlo Chime. It can be plugged into regular outlets and users can place as many of these as they want around the house. The Arlo Chime provides customizable audio alerts which is good when the user doesn’t happen to have their smartphone on them.
The pricing information hasn’t been confirmed as yet but the company has confirmed that the doorbell will be available for purchase this fall.

It may not be possible to fast charge the next iPhone using an uncertified USB Type-C charger. A new report claims that Apple’s upcoming smartphone may have support for C-AUTH. It’s an authentication specification for USB Type-C which verifies if the connected cables and chargers are certified accessories.
Macotakara reports that the upcoming iPhone is going to have support for this USB Type-C authentication specification. If the user connected an uncertified USB Type-C charger, the handset will automatically limit charger to a slower rate and would not allow the iPhone to be charged at the fastest rate.
Users who want to charge their iPhone at the fastest rate would thus have to purchase an official charger or a third-party USB Type-C charger that has received the relevant certification.
C-AUTH was created by the USB Implementers Forum of which Apple is a member. The standard helps cryptographically verify certifications. The standard’s use goes beyond clamping down on uncertified chargers. It can also be used to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks by allowing only specific devices to connect to each other, something which will be useful for secure enterprise networks.
The iPhone would thus not be fast charged at 18 Watts. If the third-party charger is not certified, the charging rate will be limited at or below 2.5 Watts. This standard was introduced in January 2018 and will likely be adopted for the new iPhones that are due this fall.
