Walmart To Launch Netflix Rival This Year

Walmart is reportedly gearing up to launch an online video streaming service that will rival Netflix later this year. It will also go up against competing services from Amazon and Hulu. Walmart’s service will reportedly be offered under the Vudu name and it’s said to be similar to other streaming services, offering licensed as well as original content.

Variety reports that Walmart’s Vudu streaming service may cost around $8 per month. Walmart’s interest in launching a video-on-demand service was also reported recently by The Information.

Vudu isn’t competing in the streaming market currently. It’s a movie rental service which offers people over 150,000 titles to rent or purchase. A limited selection is available for free to those who subscribe to its Movies On Us service that also happens to be supported by ads.

Walmart had acquired Vudu back in 2010 and while it’s no longer developing its own set-top boxes, the brand name still holds some value in the smart TV market. It’s now available as a pre-installed app on different smart TVs and streaming devices.

Vudu has been around for long enough to have relationships with studios and television networks. It can thus leverage those relationships to ink streaming deals which will be crucial for its streaming service. As for when the service might arrive, the report mentions that a launch is planned for the fourth quarter of this year.

Neo Geo Mini Already Sold Out In Japan

SNK has been teasing the Neo Geo Mini over the past month or so and eventually revealed more information about the system. It confirmed that the system would be released on July 24th in Japan for 11,500 yen which is about the same price as the SNES Classic Mini. It has been available for pre-order and has already sold out in Japan.

The Neo Geo Mini is a miniature version of the classic console game and it comes with 40 games pre-installed. The titles that are pre-installed on the mini console include Metal Slug, The King of Fighters, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

SNK has been taking pre-orders for the Neo Geo Mini through its official webshop for Japan. There are multiple bundles available to customers which include additional controllers and even a backpack.

Customers in Japan can also place pre-orders for the mini console on Amazon Japan, or at least they could, because it’s sold out there as well. It’s unclear how soon additional stock will be available to customers in the country. Pre-ordered units will be shipped to customers starting August 3rd.

The machine has a 3.5 inch LCD display so customers can play games on it without having to connect it to a TV. SNK has said that it will eventually be launched in other markets as well but it’s unclear precisely when that’s going to happen.
