Snapcash Shutting Down Next Month

Snapchat announced its move into mobile payments with Snapcash. The service enabled users to send money directly to each other. They just needed to set up their financial information first in the app before they could get started with Snapcash. The service itself was powered by Square. It appears that the company will now be forfeiting to Venmo as it’s reportedly going to shut down Snapcash next month.

TechCrunch points to code buried in Snapchat’s Android app which mentions a “Snapcash deprecation message.” The message will be meant to inform users that “Snapcash will no longer be available after %s [date].”

It’s possible that the feature may not have seen wide usage since there are already a wide variety of services that users can use to pay back their friends for that drink or meal. The list includes Venmo. Square Cash, and PayPal.

When the scribe presented the code to Snapchat, a spokesperson for the company confirmed that “Yes, we’re discontinuing the Snapcash feature as of August 30, 2018. Snapcash was our first product created in partnership with another company – Square. We’re thankful for all the Snapchatters who used Snapcash for the last four years and for Square’s partnership!.”

The spokesperson added that the company will be notifying all users about this in-app as well as through the support website soon.

Tech Giants Team Up To Make Data Transfer Easier

Some of the biggest technology companies have teamed up to make it easier for users to transfer their data. Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter have founded the Data Transfer Project to enable users to move content, contacts, and more across different apps. The DTP is an open source data portability platform which any online service will be able to join.

Many online companies already allow their users to download their data but it’s then difficult to use the data elsewhere. The Data Transfer Project will yield a tool which will make it easier to use that data elsewhere as well but the tool isn’t quite available as yet, the tech giants have only presented a white paper for how the tool will work.

An industry standard for data portability will certainly make life easier for users. They will no longer be subject to data lock-ins which make it difficult for users to switch to other services.

The DTP is described as a common framework with open-source code which can connect any two online service providers in order to enable a seamless user initiated portability of data between two platforms.

More in-depth understanding of the project and its fundamentals is present in the white paper that the tech giants have put up on the DTP’s website.

Massive Airbus BelugaXL Plane Completes First Flight

The Beluga ST is a big cargo plane made by Airbus which the airplane manufacturer uses to transport materials to its facilities where it manufactures commercial airliners. It has been building the successor to the Beluga ST which has now completed its first flight. The BelugaXL has 30 percent more payload capacity than its predecessor.

The BelugaXL completed its maiden flight from Toulouse Airport in France earlier this week. The test flight was a success which means that there will be further development work on the Beluga series. Airbus is planning to have the BelugaXL fully operational by mid-2019.

This massive airplane is nicknamed “the whale of the sky,” which is apt since the name Beluga represents a species of white whales. The aircraft itself looks like a massive whale that can fly.

It really owns up to its Beluga name as the front of the aircraft has been painted with a smiling whale face. There’s even an extra bubble section which provides the aircraft with its unique experience and increases its resemblance to the Beluga whale.

The BelugaXL has a maximum takeoff weight of 227 tons with the ability to carry 53 tons of cargo. It’s 63.1m long and 18.9m high with a wingspan of 60.3m. Rolls Royce Trent 700 turbofan engines power the behemoth.
