2018 MacBook Air Refresh Could Use Intel’s Kaby Lake Processors

There have been some who have predicted that Apple is expected to do away with its MacBook Air lineup, but there are also who some who believe that the lineup could be sticking around for a little longer. In fact there are rumors suggesting that Apple could very well update its MacBook Air lineup this year.

Now according to a new report from Taiwan’s Economic Daily News (via AppleInsider), it seems that we might have more details on the upcoming refresh. The report is claiming that Apple could be using Intel’s 8th generation Kaby Lake processors for the 2018 MacBook Air refresh. The report is suggesting that the reason behind the use of Kaby Lake is due to Intel’s continued delay of the 10nm Cannon Lake processors, which last we heard will only be ready in late 2019.

There is an alternative to the Kaby Lake and that is with the Whiskey Lake processors, although given that those processors are only released in the second half of 2018, there is a chance that there might not be enough units to go around in time for Apple’s planned refresh. However this does not mean that the Kaby Lakes will be a slouch.

The refresh Kaby Lake processors will feature quad-core Core i5 and i7 processors that can be boosted up to 3.4GHz and 4.2GHz, making them faster than the previous generation. No word on when the new MacBook Airs will be announced, but presumably it should be later this year when Apple announces its new iMac and iPad Pro refreshes.

Dropbox Upgrades Professional & Business Standard With More Storage

These days as our media files start getting bigger to accommodate higher resolution displays, our storage needs have increased as well. This is evidenced on our mobile devices where 16GB as base storage is no longer enough, and where some manufacturers are even considering putting as much as 512GB of storage into their devices.

This is applicable for cloud storage services as well where we’re also seeing an increase in the amount of storage offered. Now the good news is that if you’re a Dropbox user, it looks like Dropbox will be bumping your storage for free, although this is only applicable for users of their Professional and Business Standard accounts.

According to Dropbox, “As you collaborate on large files—like ultra hi-def video and interactive presentations—with co-workers and clients, your need for storage only increases. So we’re helping you store more by giving Dropbox Professional and Business Standard accounts an additional terabyte of space—with no change in price.”

For those on the Professional account, your storage will now be bumped up to 2TB, while Business Standard users will be bumped to 3TB. However these changes are only expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks, although if you are a new user who just signed up, then you should be able to see the new storage sizes.

Walmart To Work With TV Executive For Upcoming Streaming Service

These days we’re starting to see more companies venture into the video streaming market. There are platforms such as YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and we have also heard that Apple could be thinking of getting in on that action, while Disney is also said to be launching their own service next year.

This is why it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that Walmart could be next. According to reports, it seems that Walmart will be collaborating with TV executive Mark Greenberg for an upcoming video streaming service. Greenberg was the former CEO of Epix and also held senior roles at Showtime and HBO, so it is clear that Walmart’s collaboration with the executive is definitely with some kind of TV entertainment in mind.

However given that the competition in the streaming field is getting quite fierce, it will be interesting to see how Walmart plans on differentiating themselves. We have heard that Walmart could be planning on using Vudu (which they acquired back in 2010) and that pricing could be one way to differentiate their services, where it could cost only $8 a month.

No word on when Walmart’s streaming service is expected to launch (if at all), but we’ll keep our eyes peeled. Until then maybe take this report with a grain of salt for now.

Latest iOS 12 Beta Reveals AirPods Wireless Charging Case

One of the new products that Apple announced last year came in the form of the AirPower wireless charging mat. Based on photos, the wireless charging mat would allow users to charge devices like the iPhone, the Apple Watch, and also the AirPods, although the latter would require a separate wireless charging case.

Now thanks to the latest beta of iOS 12, it looks like the wireless charging case for the AirPods have been revealed. In terms of design, they look identical to the current case. However the images spotted in the beta reveal the indicator lights of the case to show that it is either charging or has low power (amber light), or fully charged where the indicator shows a green light.

At the moment it is unclear as to how Apple plans on selling these cases. There is some debate as to whether they will be bundled with the new AirPods, or if they will be sold as a separate accessory that users will have to buy, although we imagine that many would find this a bit redundant if they already have a case for the AirPods.

The accessory and the AirPower charging mat were initially rumored for a launch in March but that clearly has not happened. Instead many believe that the wireless charging accessories will most likely be launched in September alongside Apple’s new iPhones.

New iPhone Phishing Scam Makes Calls To A Fake ‘Apple Care’

Phishing scams aren’t new and we doubt that they will ever go away. However given that we spend so much time on our mobile devices, it’s not surprising that we are starting to see more scams that are targeting our smartphones. In a report from ArsTechnica, it seems that the latest scam is targeting iPhone users.

In their discovery, they found that this scam is targeted at users who have email addresses associated with Apple’s iCloud. Not only does the email contain a link to a fake Apple website, but it appears that when the user loads the website, it will prompt them to make a phone call to an unknown number.

When Ars tried calling the number, they were greeted by a person who identified themselves as “Lance Roger from Apple Care”. Unfortunately the scammers were suspicious when Ars tried to coax more information out of them and hung up, but presumably the scam should involve the usual, such as requesting personal information like Apple ID and password, or maybe even money like credit card information.

The good news is that Apple has caught wind of the scam because the website is now marked as “deceptive” by both Google and Apple, so if you do come across it, just close it and move on.
