Sprint LG V20 Gets Its Android 8.0 Oreo Update

The LG V20 came out in 2016. Like almost all Android smartphones, the handset was guaranteed to receive two years of major Android releases. Android 8.0 Oreo will be the final platform update that this handset gets. LG started rolling it out for the V20 some time back and Sprint is finally seeding it to LG V20 owners on its network.

LG started rolling out the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the V20 in South Korea last week. It was a clear indication that the handset would soon receive the update in other markets across the globe as well.

The first we got word about the Oreo update for the LG V20 was in April when the company merely confirmed that it would eventually release the update for the device later this year. It’s rolling out Oreo for the V20 almost three months after the initial confirmation.

Sprint is now rolling out firmware build OPR1.170623.032 for the LG V20 in the United States. In addition to all of the features that are part and parcel of the Oreo update, the firmware release comes with the security patch for the month of July 2018.

The carrier is gradually rolling out the Oreo update for the V20 on its network. It may take a while for the update to go live for all users on the network.

MoviePass Raises The Price Of Its Standard Plan

MoviePass has been having some money problems recently which led to a suspension in its services last week. It actually ran out of money which is why the service went out. It only came back online after borrowing an emergency $5 million. In a bid to keep the business afloat, MoviePass has decided to take some important steps, one of which is to increase the price of its standard plan.

The standard subscription plan of MoviePass provides subscribers with one movie per day. It previously cost $9.99 per month but the price has now been raised to $14.95, MoviePass says the price change will go into effect “within the next 30 days.”

In addition to the price increase, MoviePass will also be limiting tickets to first run movies opening on at least 1,000 screens for the first two weeks, unless they are made available on a promotional basis. Ticket availability for blockbuster movies will also be limited going forward. It already started doing this over the weekend for the latest Mission Impossible movie.

“This is a strategic move by the company to both limit cash burn and stay loyal to its mission to empower the smaller artistic film communities,” the company said in a press release. MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe added that while these changes may not be appreciated by all, they are meant to protect the longevity of the company and to prevent abuse of the service.

NVIDIA To Reveal ‘Spectacular Surprises’ At GeForce Event Next Month

Gamescom 2018, the world’s biggest gaming expo, will take place next month in Cologne, Germany. NVIDIA is planning to host an event during Gamescom 2018. The company says that “GeForce will loom large” at the expo and NVIDIA will have its own booth there in addition to its off-site GeForce Gaming Celebration which starts on August 20th.

NVIDIA will showcase new, exclusive, hands-on demos of popular upcoming games during its event. It also promises some “spectacular surprises” and not much is known about that at this point in time.

There’s a possibility that the company will unveil a new GPU at the event. It had previously lined up a talk titled “NVIDIA’s Next Generation Mainstream GPU” at Hot Chips on August 20th which is the same day as its now official GeForce event.

If previous reports are an indication, the company may unveil its new GeForce GTX 1180 GPU which will be based on the Turing architecture. Images of an alleged NVIDIA engineering sample of the new GPU were leaked online last month with the new GDDR6 memory.

The GeForce GTX 1180 is said to tout 3,584 CUDA cores with a clock speed between 1.6 and 1.8 GHz in addition to up to 16GB of GDDR6 memory. NVIDIA’s GeForce event is scheduled for 1 PM ET on August 20th. More information about this new GPU will likely be revealed at the event.
