iPhone X Plus, 6.1-inch LCD iPhone dummies pop up

The next few weeks will be a busy time for the smartphone world in general but Apple fans are probably going to watch the days go by with some disinterest. It won’t be until later in September when their time in the spotlight comes, with the launch of three new iPhone models. That, of course, doesn’t mean the flow of … Continue reading

Amazon Now Taking Pre-Orders For Microsoft’s Surface Go Tablet

A couple of weeks ago Microsoft launched their latest Surface tablet in the form of the Surface Go. Shortly after the launch Microsoft started taking pre-orders for the device via the official Microsoft Store, but in case you prefer doing your shopping on Amazon for whatever reason, Amazon has also started to accept pre-orders for the tablet as well.

In terms of pricing, there is no difference from the Amazon listing and the Microsoft listing. This means that the model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage will retail for $399, while the 8GB RAM and 128GB memory option will retail for slightly more expensive at $549. Some might wonder why shop through Amazon when you can buy it from Microsoft directly, but there are some advantages depending on where you live.

For example some reports have pointed out that over in Spain, Amazon Spain is giving a 25% discount on the higher-end model where instead of it being priced at 599 EUR, it is now priced at 449 EUR, so for our readers in Spain, you will be able to take advantage of this discount. However the downside is that the tablet will only begin shipping to you on the 28th of August for those living in Europe, versus the US where it is set for a release on the 2nd of August which is this coming Thursday.

Some OnePlus 6 Users Are Complaining Of Screen Flickering

oneplus 6Updates are usually viewed as a good thing since it means either improvements, bug fixes, or even new features. Unfortunately in some cases updates can also cause some unwanted side-effects, and in the case of OnePlus 6 owners, it appears that a recent update to the handset has caused some issue with the display.

Posts on Reddit and the OnePlus forums (via PhoneArena) has revealed that there are some OnePlus 6 owners who discovered that under certain lighting conditions, they are noticing that their handset displays are flickering as if they are shifting back and forth between different brightness levels. Those affected are claiming that this is more prominent with images or content that is most white, and also content with very vivid colors (meaning that content with muted or dark colors don’t seem so obvious).

These users are also claiming that this seems to happen under very bright sunlight. The reports of the issue also started coming in after the OxygenOS 5.1.8 update, so it is possible that this could be a software issue that could potentially be interfering with the phone’s ambient light sensor versus a hardware problem.

OnePlus has yet to find out what’s wrong and have requested that users who are experiencing it share a log of their phone along with a recording of the screen. At the moment there is no word on when how quickly a patch will arrive or how widespread the problem is.

Google To Fix Gboard’s ‘Sit On My Face’ Autocomplete Suggestion

Autocomplete is useful as it does save you some time from typing, which when you’re in a rush can save you valuable seconds. Now autocomplete has come a long way over the years where it has gotten better where it’s getting smarter at figuring out what you’re trying to say next, but unfortunately this can lead to some questionable results.

Recently it seems that some Gboard (Google’s keyboard app) users are discovering that when they type, “sit on”, they are given the autocomplete option of finishing it with, “my face and”. Given that Android’s prediction algorithm has removed several sexual terms such as “coitus” and “intercourse”, it seems strange that “sit on my face” (NSFW) made the cut.

Google has since confirmed to BuzzFeed News that a fix to remove the phrase is incoming and that it has already started rolling out to users. The spokesperson also added, “Gboard is designed to avoid such predictions in its generic models, but human language is complex, and as with any sort of system that filters sensitive phrases, sometimes inappropriate suggestions make it through into the machine learning models. When we learn of an inappropriate suggestion we work quickly to remove it.”

Interestingly when BuzzFeed News did some tests, they found that the suggestion appeared when typing on Google’s Pixel devices, but yet did not appear when using a Samsung Galaxy S9. We imagine your mileage may vary but regardless it seems that Google has done away with this for good.

Fox AI predicts a movie's audience based on its trailer

Modern movie trailers are already cynical exercises in attention grabbing (such as the social media-friendly burst of imagery at the start of many clips), but they might be even more calculated in the future. Researchers at 20th Century Fox have prod…

Magic Leap Lumin OS interface is thankfully familiar

One of the problems with new computing platforms is the danger to go overboard in trying to present a novel experience. Nowhere is that truer than with virtual and augmented reality where user interfaces are already split into two almost diametrically opposed camps. As one of the most popular proponents of controller-less AR experience, Magic Leap runs the risk of … Continue reading

YouTube dark mode comes to Android at long last

You would think that being owned by Google means that YouTube would prioritize adding features on Google’s platforms. After all, there are already too many app developers coming first to iOS and only to Android later (or never) that Google doesn’t need to make matters worse. And yet that was exactly the case with YouTube’s dark mode, which is already … Continue reading

Segway’s Next Invention Are A Pair Of Roller Shoes

Segway is a company that many might be familiar with as the company that created the personal transportation device, which has since been used in many a TV show and movie, such as Paul Blart: Mall Cop. However it seems that Segway has decided to make something a little more compact which comes in the form of the Drift W1.

Details are a bit scarce at the moment, but basically these look like mechanized versions of roller skates/roller blades, or if you want to look at it from another angle, they look like the “hoverboards” that have been halved. Each unit is said to weigh around 7.7lbs and will provide the wearer with a top speed of 7.5 miles per hour.

However don’t expect to be able to roll your way across country as the Draft W1s are said to have an estimated battery life of 45 minutes per charge, which will vary depending on your “riding style and terrain”, according to the company. As for availability, Segway plans on launching the Draft W1s in August where they’ll be priced at $399 which will include a free helmet. If this sounds like something you’re interested in, head on over to Segway’s website for the details.

Amazon Clarifies Their ‘Prototype Phone’ Comment

Amazon has had some success when it comes to mobile devices. For example their Fire Android tablets were extremely popular back in the day, so by extension you would assume the same for their smartphones, right? Unfortunately that did not prove to be true, but at the same time we imagine that there are probably some who want to see Amazon try again.

This is why there has been a bit of buzz/excitement surrounding a recent report in which Amazon Studios chief Jen Salke seemed to suggest that the company could be working on a new phone. However you might be disappointed to learn that is not true. According to a clarification by an Amazon spokeswoman to TheWrap, they said that Salke’s comments were referring to a “prototype user interface” instead of a “prototype phone”.

For those who did not read the earlier report, Salke was asked by a reporter during the Television Critics Association press tour about whether or not a better UI was being developed for Prime users, in which she mentioned that she was shown a “prototype phone”. This ultimately led to speculation that Salke might have dropped hints at Amazon’s reignited smartphone plans.

However as the Amazon spokeswoman clarified, Salke had misspoke and meant to say “prototype user interface” instead. Could this be a cover up or was it a genuine mistake and that there is no new Amazon phone in the works? We suppose we’ll just have to wait and see, but maybe don’t get your hopes up just yet.
