T-Mobile LG G6 Oreo Update Released

Even though Android Oreo will no longer be the most recent stable iteration of Google’s mobile platform in a couple of months, many compatible devices have yet to be upgraded to Android 8.0. Oreo has gradually been making its way to more devices over the past couple of months and now the T-Mobile LG G6 Oreo update has finally been released.

Even though the LG G6 has received Oreo quite late on T-Mobile, it hasn’t been upgraded to Android 8.1. The firmware build H87220a bumps up the device to Android 8.0. The latest security patch for June 2018 isn’t included as well. The update brings the May security patch.

It brings all of the features that users look forward to in the Oreo update. Features such as autofill apps, picture-in-picture support, notification improvements, and user interface tweaks are also present onboard.

T-Mobile is now rolling out the LG G6 Oreo update in phases so it may take a couple of days for the update to go live for all users across the United States. Those who receive it will soon see an over-the-air update notification on their handsets. It’s also possible to get the update early by trying your luck with the manual check for updates option in the settings menu.

Facebook Looking To Acquire English Premier League Broadcast Rights

Facebook has been padding its video offering by acquiring streaming rights for major sporting events and it appears that the company is working on a big deal in this space. According to a new report, Facebook is a contender to acquire broadcast rights for the English Premier League in several markets across Southeast Asia.

Bloomberg reports that Facebook is negotiating rights with the Premier League which will enable the social network to broadcast the English Premier League in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The company is expected to make an announcement in the next couple of weeks.

The exclusive three-year broadcast deal will highlight that Facebook is serious about making its offering a hub for sports fans. This will also be a great way for Facebook to get people in the region to spend more time on its platform.

It’s obviously not the only company in the running for these rights. BeIN Sports, a broadcaster based in Qatar, is trying to secure the rights as well. It reportedly won the ongoing three-year deal to screen all 380 English Premier League matches in the region for $250 million.

TV Sports Markets, an online trade publication, reports that Facebook is close to securing the rights. If the reports are accurate then we may see Facebook making a formal announcement in this regard soon.

Samsung DeX Dual Monitor Support Likely Coming Soon

Samsung introduced its DeX peripheral with the Galaxy S8 last year. It enables the device to power a PC-like experience on an external monitor that’s connected to the handset through the DeX Pad. It’s currently possible to use only one monitor with DeX at this point in time but a new report suggests that Samsung DeX dual monitor support is set to arrive later this year.

Samsung is going to launch its new flagship tablet the Galaxy Tab S4 in the coming months, most likely at the IFA 2018 show in Berlin this September. The new tablet is said to have support for DeX.

The report mentions that Samsung will provide users with the options to use the tablet display as a second monitor when it’s hooked up to DeX. It would make sense to have a tablet in dual monitor mode but the feature could ostensibly work with smartphones as well.

The report doesn’t clarify how the dual monitor mode will work with the tablet since the DeX Pad accessory can’t prop up a tablet. Samsung may have users buy the Book Cover that it’s reportedly going to launch with the Galaxy Tab S4 if they want to use DeX for this purpose.

Compatible Galaxy Note and Galaxy S handsets could get support for the dual monitor mode through a software update not too long after the Galaxy Tab S4 is released later this year with support for this year.

Warner Bros. Says No Bethesda Code Used For Westworld Mobile

Warner Bros. recently cashed in on the popularity of its Westworld TV series by releasing a game for smartphones called Westworld Mobile. Those who downloaded the game were quick to notice that it had some similarities to Fallout Shelter, a mobile-only game released by Bethesda some time ago. Behaviour Interactive was the developer that worked on both games and Bethesda later filed a lawsuit against the developer and WB that its source code was used in the development of Westworld Mobile. WB has now responded to the matter.

Bethesda’s lawsuit claimed that the source code for Fallout Shelter was reused during the development of Westworld Mobile. Bethesda wants the game to be taken offline aside from damages. The allegation has now been disputed by Warner Bros. which says that the game contains no code from Bethesda’s project.

The company has said in a statement that “Warner Bros. has a deep respect for intellectual property rights. As such, the assertions by Bethesda Softworks that Warner’s Westworld mobile game improperly used source code from Bethesda’s Fallout Shelter are as surprising as they are unsubstantiated.”

The company adds that it has been assured by Behaviour Interactive that Bethesda’s allegations are not true and that none of the latter’s code was used in Westworld Mobile. Warner Bros. also said that it never “induced” the developer to use code from Fallout Shelter in Westworld Mobile.

Bethesda is yet to comment on this latest development.

Instagram Testing A Fixed Stories Bar

Instagram has seen a lot of success with the Stories feature that it pinched from Snapchat with more people actually using the feature on Instagram than they do on the ephemeral messaging app. Stories are front and center in the Instagram app as they’re displayed in a bar above the feed. It appears that the Facebook-owned service wants people to interact with Stories more as it’s now testing a fixed Stories bar in the app.

The Stories bar normally stays at the top and doesn’t follow you down the feed but The Verge has noted that Instagram is now testing a persistent approach which will see the Stories bar follow you down the feed.

Some of the over 400 million people that use Instagram Stories on a daily basis might like this change but many others won’t. They might find it annoying to look at the Stories bubble no matter how far down they go in their feed.

Instagram only seems to be testing this change with a small number of users at this point in time. The company confirmed to the scribe that “We’re always testing ways to improve the experience on Instagram and make it easier to share any moment with the people who matter to you,” but didn’t say if it’s planning to make this a permanent thing.

Waze’s Incident Reports Rolling Out In Google Maps

Google acquired the Waze navigation app some five years ago and it remains popular with users because of one core feature: incident reports. Users can report accidents, road closures, and other traffic problems in the app which then helps other users decide whether or not they want to continue on their route if there’s a problem up ahead. According to a new report, a similar feature is now rolling out in Google Maps.

Many users have reported that they now have the incident reports feature in Google Maps. The feature will display the time when an accident has been reported, if there’s road work up ahead, and whether a user is confident that a slowdown is still active.

The feature was actually spotted in a Google Maps APK teardown a couple of weeks back and it appears that the company has now flipped the switch on this feature for some users. However, Google is yet to confirm if it’s rolling out incident reports for all Google Maps users or if it’s just conducting a test on a small scale.

One might wonder why Waze’s core feature would be added to Maps as that would put the former at risk of losing users. However, Maps is an all-encompassing app which is for public transit, walking, and biking directions in addition to recommendations and local business information. Waze is meant for drivers specifically and is largely preferred for that particular purpose.

Drake Smashes Record With New Album On Apple Music And Spotify

Drake is no stranger to setting and breaking records on streaming services. His new studio album titled Scorpion is out now and Apple has confirmed that Drake has smashed his own single-day record on Apple Music. Scorpion resulted in more than 170 million streams in 24 hours, significantly higher than the previous record of 89.9 million first-day streams set by Drake’s More Life mixtape that came out last year.

It was a similar story on Spotify, the world’s top music streaming service. Scorpion has shattered the one-day global record on Spotify with the album racking up 132,450,203 streams, up 50,000,000 streams compared to the previous record-holder from Post Malone.

The numbers are from data tracker SpotifyCharts.com as the streaming service itself hasn’t confirmed the figures. A representative for Spotify did tell Variety that Drake’s new album has broken the record by a large measure.

While it appears unlikely, if the album continues to rack up streams at this rate, it would total more than one billion streams in its first week which would break yet another record. Post Malone’s Beerbongs & Bentleys also set this record last month with 411 million streams in its first week.

The numbers haven’t come in from other streaming services such as Tidal and Amazon but it’s likely going to be a similar story there given that there seems to be no stopping Drake’s new album.
