WhatsApp Adds One-Way Broadcast Messages To Groups

WhatsApp has recently been improving the groups experience for its users. It has added some new features such as group descriptions, a new catch up feature, and protection for people who are added to groups they have left repeatedly. The Facebook-owned company today announced that it’s adding a one-way broadcast messages feature to groups.

WhatsApp is rolling out a new group setting which will allow only group administrations to send messages to a group. No other person in the group will be able to send a message when the administrator has this feature enabled.

The company acknowledges that the groups feature is used by many people for important announcements and information such as parents and teachers at school, non-profit organizations, and community centers. They can enable this feature and rest assured that no one else in the group will be able to flood other members with messages that may not be relevant to the purpose of the group.

WhatsApp competitor Telegram already offers this functionality. It lets users create groups or channels. The former are for conversations where different people can contribute while channels are meant only for one-way broadcast messages.

The Facebook-owned service is essentially introducing channels with this feature. Group admins can enable this feature from “Group Info,” by tapping Group Settings > Send Messages and selecting “Only Admins” in the latest version of the app.

Instagram Testing A Fixed Stories Bar

Instagram has seen a lot of success with the Stories feature that it pinched from Snapchat with more people actually using the feature on Instagram than they do on the ephemeral messaging app. Stories are front and center in the Instagram app as they’re displayed in a bar above the feed. It appears that the Facebook-owned service wants people to interact with Stories more as it’s now testing a fixed Stories bar in the app.

The Stories bar normally stays at the top and doesn’t follow you down the feed but The Verge has noted that Instagram is now testing a persistent approach which will see the Stories bar follow you down the feed.

Some of the over 400 million people that use Instagram Stories on a daily basis might like this change but many others won’t. They might find it annoying to look at the Stories bubble no matter how far down they go in their feed.

Instagram only seems to be testing this change with a small number of users at this point in time. The company confirmed to the scribe that “We’re always testing ways to improve the experience on Instagram and make it easier to share any moment with the people who matter to you,” but didn’t say if it’s planning to make this a permanent thing.

Motorola To Unveil New Flagship Smartphone On August 2nd

It appears that Motorola is gearing up to launch a new flagship smartphone next month. The company has sent invites to the press for an event which will take place on August 2nd. Motorola says that it will be making a “big announcement” at the event which will likely result in a new flagship smartphone being unveiled at the event at its Chicago headquarters.

The invite reveals that Motorola will be making this “big announcement” at 2 PM on August 2nd at its headquarters in Chicago. The company adds that what it announces at the event will “change the way people use and interact with their phones.”

The device will provide users with “a whole new way to connect, stream, download, video chat, and more,” according to Motorola, so it’s quite possible that we may be treated to more than one device at the event.

It’s not evident at this point in time which handset Motorola will be showing off at its August 2nd event but there have been rumors about two new handsets that the company has in the pipeline. They include the Moto Z3 which may be a flagship with the Snapdragon 845 chip and possibly an Android One smartphone from Motorola.

Unless they are leaks leading up to the launch, we’ll only come to know the truth on August 2nd.

Shut up and Take My Money for this Planet Express Master Series Ship Replica!

I loved every single episode of Futurama when it was on the air, and have watched most of the episodes at least twice since they first ran. Matt Groening’s animated sci-fi comedy may not be making new episodes anymore, but that doesn’t mean you can’t show your love for the series every day. This replica of the Planet Express ship should serve as a great reminder.

I can imagine tiny versions of Fry, Leela, Bender, Professor Farnsworth, Hermes, Zoidberg, and Amy flying around the universe making same day deliveries in this miniature Master Series Planet Express ship. The ship is a perfect replica of the one on the show, and features lots of neat details.

The 12″ long model even lights up at the push of a button, with LED illumination of the cockpit, portholes, and rocket exhaust pipes. Quantum Mechanix are the guys behind this awesome collectible, and they know a thing or two about making great toys and replicas.

And here’s the good news, everyone! You can buy one today over at ThinkGeek, and it won’t break the bank either, since it’s priced at just $59.99. How could you NOT afford to buy one?
